Mary Margaret came to the US in 1892, according to census records. She settled first in Keokuk, Iowa where at least two of her sisters and her aunt Ellen Shannon Hynes also lived. George and Mary's address in a 1901-1902 Keokuk City Directory was 626 S. 7th, adjacent to her sister Nellie (Shannon) Gavin's address of 624 S. 7th in the 1900 census. Mary's sister Delia Shannon is also at the 626 S. 7th address in the 1901-1902 directory.

On her baptism record, she is listed with the latin form of her name, Maria.

The Loter family later lived at 902 Palean Street in Keokuk, and Mary's aunt, Ellen Shannon Hynes, died at this home in 1924. George Loter was a pall-bearer for Mary's uncle Martin Hynes in 1921.
