The old parish records of Kirkpatrick Fleming parish in Dumfriesshire record the births of six children of this John Rome. Rome is sometimes spelled as Room. These records show John Rome and his family lived in New Hope from 1789 to 1794, then in Hayfield in 1797 and then in Hayberries from 1799-1802. Hayfield is about a mile north of the town of Kirkpatrick Fleming. There are a couple other probably-related Rome families with births registered in Kirkpatrick Fleming during the same era, but I don't know how or if they are related. Included with these other Rome families is another John Rome and his wife Jean Clark who have children between 1797 and 1809.

Here is the tombstone inscription for John Rome and Jean Rae, numbered 324 in the survey of the cenetery. Two other stones beside this one apparently refer to related Rome family members. From this inscription, I believe David (died 1786) was the father of this John Rome.

John Rome son of Andrew Rome in Scales who died 17th October 1743 age 27. Also David Rome in Brackenbushrig who died 26th August 1786 age 69. Also John Rome in Hayfield who died 20th January 1815 age 61. Also David Rome his son who died 18th May 1833 age 44. And Jean Rae spouse to the above John Rome who died 13th May 1844 age 81. Also James Rome their son who died 11th February 1843 age 56.
