About two years before he died, Ray went blind. He went to Chicago for an operation but there was no cure for his case. At the time his sight began to fail, Ray was in a Chicago art school and had ambitions of becoming a sketch artist and cartoonist. His obituary notes that Ray had natural talents as an artist. Ray never married.
