Generation No. 1 1. S AMUEL1 CARY. He married RUTH 18321.Notes for S AMUEL CARY:The 1836 Newfoundland census notes that Samuel Cary (present spelling of Kearley did not come into existence until the period 1880-1890) had a fishing boat which weighed under 15 tons, that he planted half an acre of land, that he grew 30 bushels of potatoes and that he was a member of the Episcopal Church. He had a household consisting of 3 males under age 14, 1 male age 14 - 60, 3 females under age 14, and 2 females age 14-60. Samuel's house was directly across a cove from Richard Philpott's house, about 200 feet apart. Two of their children eventually married. Rex Kearley's notes indicate that the surname Carey is found in England, Ireland and Guernsey. There is a place in Devon called Carey Baron, after the River Carey. In the Gaelic there are seven variants of this name, and that may account for the changes that have occurred in the surname over the past 150 years. The name "Carey" is listed in K. Matthews, "A 'Who was Who' of Families Engaged in the Fishery and Settlement of Newfoundland 1660-1840." Notes for R UTH:Ruth's last name may have been Pollard, per Louise Kearley's notes. Rex Kearley suggests the possibility of Stuckey. Children of S AMUEL CARY and RUTH are:i. ??2 KEARLEY. Notes for ?? A Joseph Kerley is listed in the Twillingate Sun (see "Gleanings from the Sun") as being the Master of the Winnifred. September 3, 1892 Per the Encyclopedia of Newfoundland and Labrador: HATCHET HARBOUR (pop. 1981, 75) A small fishing community, Hatchet Harbour is located on the northwestern side of Goshen's Arm in northeastern New World Island, approximately 10 km (6 mi.) east of Twillingate. According to local tradition, Joseph Kearley first settled Hatchet Harbour in 1884, coming from Salt Harbour Island to the north and building on land purchased from one Eli Pollard. The community first appeared separately in the Census n 1945, with a population of seventeen. It is sometimes referred to as part of Herring Neck. Per Rex Kearley - Before they lived in Hatchet Harbour, Joseph and Miriam built their first house on Salt Harbour Island, at the upper end of Starve Harbour, in a place that later became known as Randell's Tickle. When Joseph and Miriam moved to Hatchet Harbour, their son Alfred took over the house before selling it to the Randell family. In 1936, however, Ned Kearley repurchased the house from the Randell family. A Joseph Kearley was an elector and house holder in Starve Harbour in 1889, per voting lists in the Thomas Peyton Collection at PANL. Per Rex Kearley - "There is one account of my grandfather coming back in the fall with less fish than enough to cover his expenses for that year. He had a schooner, a fairly large one called the Clementine, and Carter's trade threatened to take his schooner for the portion of the bills that he couldn't pay that summer. The story was recorded in the Twillingate Sun. The old gentleman took a few of his muzzle loading guns, went aboard the schooner and said "Come take her." They didn't. He was probably capable of shooting them anyway. The next summer he got somebody else to outfit him, made a very successful voyage and paid them all off. You are talking about a family that never grovelled . . . ." Notes for MIRIAM PHILPOTT: Miriam is listed in the 1921 Census as living with her son Edwin in Sunnyside. Miriam was also listed as a member of the Church of England. Miriam was John Esau Miles' only surviving aunt or uncle at the time of his death in 1931, per Adventure with John Esau (AWJE). Children of JOSEPH KEARLEY and MIRIAM PHILPOTT are:
7. SAMUEL (JR.)2 KEARLEY (SAMUEL1 CARY) was born August 1847 in Goshen's Arm, Newfoundland22, and died Aft. 1921. He married MARY OXFORD October 30, 1882 in Herring Neck, Newfoundland23. Notes for SAMUEL (JR.) KEARLEY: Samuel was baptized on November 30, 1852. Samuel, Jr.'s descendants are in the Bishop's Falls area of Newfoundland, per Rex Kearley. The 1921 census lists Samuel as living in Goshen's Arm, Newfoundland, and being a fisherman who belonged to the Church of England. The census also states that Samuel's grandson, George Kearley, born in July, 1921, lived with him in Goshen's Arm. The Twillingate Sun lists a Samuel Carley as bringing an action against a William Whey for trespassing on September 25, 1886. A Samuel Kerley was listed as an elector in Goshens Arm in 1889, per voting lists in the Thomas Peyton Collection at PANL. Notes for MARY OXFORD: The birth date for Mary in the Census records is probably incorrect. Marriage Notes for SAMUEL KEARLEY and MARY OXFORD: Joseph Carely (Kearley) and Miriam Oxford witnessed the marriage. Children of SAMUEL KEARLEY and MARY OXFORD are:
8. ANDREW2 CAREY (SAMUEL1 CARY) was born 1851 in Herring Neck, Newfoundland28, and died Bef. 1900. Notes for DINAH VINCENT: Per Milligan Batt, as told to Robert Batt, Dinah could not read or write. She lived with her son Garnet after the death of her first husband, Benjamin. She then married Andrew Miles, a widower. He owned a fishing schooner, the Cavalier, and she accompanied him to the Labrador to cook. When the fisheries failed in the late 1940's, Andrew and Dinah moved to Corner Brook to live with his son Hubert. When Andrew died Dinah again lived with her son Garnet, where she remained until her death. Children of ANDREW MILES and IRENE are:
12. MIRIAM (MINNIE)3 KEARLEY (THOMAS2, SAMUEL1 CARY) was born July 1872 in Salt Harbor Island, Herring Neck, Newfoundland43, and died July 30, 1946 in Herring Neck, Newfoundland44. Notes for MARGARET DAISY KEARLEY: In 1907 Margaret was a serving girl for Dr. Stirling in Twillingate. Once Margaret and Caleb married, Margaret inherited some of her family's furniture, including a rocking chair that had belonged to her mother and a small pink trunk which had belonged to her father. Margaret attended day school in Herrng Neck until her father died, and then she went and lived with Peter Grimes, working for him. Notes for CALEB TIZZARD: Caleb was the postmaster in Salt Pans for many years. He also built a new school there in 1917. His main trade, however, was as a cooper. He spend a number of years coopering in Herring Neck, and he boarded with William Mehaney there. Children of MARGARET KEARLEY and CALEB TIZZARD are:
14. ALFRED3 KEARLEY (JOSEPH2, SAMUEL1 CARY) was born July 1864 in Sunnyside, Newfoundland56. He married SUSANNAH SEALEY November 12, 1888 in Sunnyside, Newfoundland57, daughter of JOHN SEALEY and LAVINIA WARREN. Notes for ALFRED KEARLEY: Alfred is listed as a fisherman and a member of the Church of England, living in Sunnyside, in the 1921 Census. A girl named Fanny Kearley, who was born in September 1914 in Pouch Cove, Newfoundland, is listed as living with Alfred as his adopted daughter in the 1921 census. Don Kearley (Alfred's great-grandson, now living in Pennsylvania) says that family legend has it that Alfred was a fishing captain who would go out to sea for several months at a time. He would trade molasses and salt-cured fish with Eskimos for meat and furs. Alfred reputedly had a bad accident that sunk his ship and he almost died at sea. Supposedly Alfred no longer worked as a fisherman after that accident. An Alfred Kerley was listed as a 28 year old elector in Starve Harbour in 1889, per voting lists in the Thomas Peyton Collection at PANL. Children of ALFRED KEARLEY and SUSANNAH SEALEY are:
15. JOHN JOSEPH3 KEARLEY (JOSEPH2, SAMUEL1 CARY) was born December 1866 in Sunnyside, Newfoundland60, and died July 27, 1960 in Herring Neck, Newfoundland61. He married MARY BLANDFORD December 25, 1900, daughter of JOSEPH BLANDFORD and ELIZABETH. Notes for JOHN JOSEPH KEARLEY: John Kearley is listed in the 1921 census as living in Sunnyside with his four children. He is listed as a fisherman and a Methodist. John was one of the nineteen charter members of the Fisherman's Protective Union, per Twenty Years of the FPU. John was baptized on January 8, 1867 per PANL v. 85. Rex Kearley's family sheet lists him as having been born in 1866. The 1921 Census lists him as being born in 1886, which is clearly wrong, but could be a typo for 1866. He was aged 93 years, 7 months at his death, which supports the 1866 age. John was the lightkeeper at Baccalieu Island around the turn of the century. Per Wilson Tuffin, John left the Methodist Church (in which he had been very active) because they hired a poor man in the area, who was a member of the church, to be the janitor. This man was behind in his church dues, and the congregation refused to hire him because of this. John tried to sway the congregation to hire the man, but they refused. John then indicated that he would no longer be a member of the church because of this decision, and walked out. After the death of his mother Miriam, John renounced his share of the residuary estate of John Esau Miles, and his share went to his children Frank, Carrie, Evelyn and Mina. A John Kerley was an elector in Merrits Harbour in 1889, per voting lists in the Thomas Peyton Collection at PANL. He was listed as 25 years of age. Notes for MARY BLANDFORD: Mary was baptized on July 36, 1868, per PANL v. 85. Children of JOHN KEARLEY and MARY BLANDFORD are:
16. ARTHUR3 KEARLEY (JOSEPH2, SAMUEL1 CARY) was born Bef. March 20, 1869 in Starve Harbour, Herring Neck, Newfoundland64, and died August 4, 1938 in Herring Neck, Newfoundland65. He married ROSANNA HURLEY66. Notes for ARTHUR KEARLEY: Arthur is listed in the 1921 census as being a fisherman and a member of the Church of England. He lived in Sunnyside at that time. Notes for ROSANNA HURLEY: Is it possible that this Roseanna was the daughter of George Hurley and Roseannah Tuffin? The birthplace and date are right for her to be the sister of George Hurley b. 1876 Too Good Arm, who had a daughter Rosannah. Children of ARTHUR KEARLEY and ROSANNA HURLEY are:
17. EMMA3 KEARLEY (JOSEPH2, SAMUEL1 CARY) was born July 187267, and died Aft. 1921. She married DAVID GRIMES November 16, 1892 in Herring Neck, Newfoundland. Notes for EMMA KEARLEY: Emma is listed in the 1921 census as living in Sunnyside with her husband and children Fred and Ida. She is listed as a member of the Church of England. Notes for DAVID GRIMES: David is listed in the 1921 census as being a carpenter and a member of the Church of England. Children of EMMA KEARLEY and DAVID GRIMES are:
18. WILLIAM3 KEARLEY (JOSEPH2, SAMUEL1 CARY) was born Bef. August 23, 1874 in Herring Neck, Newfoundland70, and died November 14, 1917 in Herring Neck, Newfoundland71. Notes for WILLIAM KEARLEY: Per Carl Kearley, William became a Salvation Army minister and the family ostracized him for leaving the Church of England. He is buried in the Salvation Army cemetery in Merritts Harbour. Per Rex Kearley, William died of tuberculosis. William Kearley, Sr. is listed as one of the nineteen charter members of the FPU in "Twenty Years of the FPU." Is it this William? Notes for DINAH CROSSLEY: Rex Kearley reports her name as Daisy Farthing. However, the first name Dinah comes from William's headstone. I don't recall how I knew it was Dinah Crossley, however. Child of WILLIAM KEARLEY and DINAH CROSSLEY is:
19. EDWIN (NED)3 KEARLEY (JOSEPH2, SAMUEL1 CARY) was born Bef. January 25, 1878 in Herring Neck, Newfoundland73, and died May 14, 1943 in Herring Neck, Newfoundland74. He married (1) EMMA COAKER in St. John's, Newfoundland75, daughter of WILLIAM COAKER and ELIZABETH FORD. He married (2) JANET HURLEY Bef. 1908, daughter of ABRAHAM HURLEY and MARY ??. He married (3) HILDA BLANCHE DAWE 192776, daughter of AZARIAH DAWE and CLEMENTINE COLLINS. Notes for EDWIN (NED) KEARLEY: Edwin is listed in the 1921 census as living in Sunnyside and being an agent of the Fisherman's Union Trading Co. The Union Trading Co. was established in 1912 to import merchandise to sell to members of the Union and the Union councils, and to supply the Union cash stores. The cash stores allowed fisherman to buy their goods directly, rather than being forced to trade their catch to merchants in exchange for goods, and were very important in improving the economic condition of Newfoundland's fishermen. Edwin's first wife, Emma Coaker, was the sister of Sir William Coaker, the founder of the Fisherman's Protective Union, and Edwin was one of the nineteen charter member of the Union, per Twenty Years of the FPU. Edwin Kearley was an officer of the Supreme Council of the Fisherman's Protective Union as follows: 1909 - Treasurer 1910 - Treasurer 1911 - Secretary After 1911, the positions of Secretary and Treasurer were combined and they were made a full-time position at the head office of the Union. At the Second Annual Convention in December 1910, Edwin was elected a member of the following five-person committees: the Committee on Union Stores, the Committee on The Fisherman's Advocate (the FPU newspaper) and the Committee to draft Memorial to the Governor-in-Council (this was the text of the Union's positions given to the government of Newfoundland). At some point after 1911, Ned and Coaker had a falling out and Ned became the lightkeeper on Baccalieu Island for three years. This was a position his brother John had held around the turn of the century. Ned and Coaker eventually reconciled, and Ned was sent to Little Bay Islands to manage the FPU store there. Edwin was a member of the Committee which prepared the Address in reply to the President's Address opening the Twentieth Convention of the FPU. Edwin was a member of the Church of England, per the 1921 Census. Notes for EMMA COAKER: Emma died of tuberculosis. Notes for JANET HURLEY: Rex Kearley's information lists Oliver's mother as Blanche Hurley, not Janet Hurley. However, the 1921 Census lists her as Janet, and Phyllis Rendell Steiner states that her name was Jeanett. Rex also states that she died in 1916 in a flu epidemic. Child of EDWIN KEARLEY and EMMA COAKER is:
Child of EDWIN KEARLEY and JANET HURLEY is:
Child of EDWIN KEARLEY and HILDA DAWE is:

She married JABEZ RICHARD KING November 7, 1902. Notes for FANNY KEARLEY: Fanny settled in the Boston, Massachusetts area. At one time, she took care of her great-nephews, Wilson B. Tuffin and Harvey John Tuffin, when their mother, Mina Kearley Tuffin, was ill for an extended period of time. Fannie died in a two car accident in Corner Brook, Newfoundland while visiting relatives. She was buried on July 9, 1966 in Massachusetts. Robert Margeson remembers Mina Kearley and her sister Carrie visiting Fannie and her husband in Everett in the early 1940's. Fanny was Rex Kearley's godmother. Josiah was one of the nineteen charter members of the Fisherman's Protective Union, per per Twenty Years of the FPU. Per the Encyclopedia of Newfoundland and Labrador, Josiah Kearley of Herring Neck established a salmon-packing operation in Sop's Arm in 1943.
