Kiana! {kee-AH-nah}

It was another successful year in La Quinta!  The Indian Wells Resort courses were short on yardage but were beautiful.  The staff treated us like royalty.  And the shotgun start was AWESOME!  We all played in the same weather condition and we pretty much ended at the same time.  It got hotter on Sunday and the last several holes were hot, but other than that, I think the heat was bearable on the course.  See Debra’s section for more.  Oh, and I have to apologize to Alan Wettig.  I told Mike to pack the camera because I was on picture duty for Alan.  Well, Mike accidentally packed the video camera instead of the digital camera.  So, no pictures. L

October 1st starts our annual membership drive.  It’s time for you to renew your membership.  The costs are staying the same as the 2009 dues -- $70 from now until November 30th.  Starting December 1st, dues will go up to $80.  Get your friends to join!  They can enjoy 15 months for the price of 12 months.  Another advantage, stated by Mark Page, for them to sign up now “is that they’ll have their index number before the end of the year and they can start posing scores before the end of the year.”  The form is in the back of the newsletter.

In just one and a half weeks we’ll crown our latest Club Champions.  Hopefully most of you will be sharing in the festivities of our end of year banquet.  Remember you must be present to win one of our fabulous drawing prizes.  Mark and Pat do a great job buying just what we want!

Our website is now operational, but not pretty.  This newsletter is still at www.oocities.org/greatamericangolf, at least until the 26th.  Mike and I (really Mike) are going to be tweaking our new site in the next few weeks so it might not look the same next time you visit.  Geocities is closing their free website so it’s time to move.  You can find, and should bookmark, our new site at http://gagc.comxa.com/.  And since change is good, our email address is changing too.  It is now greatamericangc@gmail.com.

Golf Question:

In stroke play, a player incorrectly substitutes a ball when dropping after taking relief from casual water. What is the ruling if he has not yet played a stroke with the dropped ball?

a) He must mark and lift the substituted ball and replace the original ball.

 b) He must lift the substituted ball and drop the original ball.

c) There is a two-stroke penalty and the substituted ball is the ball in play.

Answer is at the end of the newsletter.

SCGA is moving to GHIN – some additional information

The inception of GHIN began in the spring of 1980 when a Regional Golf Association wished to change its handicap service vendor. In an effort to provide a quality service to maintain handicaps, the USGA® was approached and asked to help in providing this type of service. GHIN was organized and developed by the spring of 1981 and provided handicap computation services initially for the Metropolitan Golf Association, in New York.
GHIN has now become the world's largest handicap computation service. GHIN is provided through 62 State, Regional or National Golf Associations to over 10,000 clubs and approximately 1.9 million golfers. GHIN is maintained by the United States Golf Association® and the staff is composed of USGA employees.

GHIN Questions

  1. If a member already has a GHIN number with another association, they will retain that member number and their SCGA scoring record will be consolidated into their GHIN scoring record.  Please contact the handicap department with the name, SCGA number, existing GHIN number and golf association where they are a member, at handicap@scga.org or (800) 913-7242.  Thank you to all who have already sent their information into the office.
  2. The majority of members will just need to add a 9 in front of their current SCGA number to use as their GHIN number.  This will automatically take place in January 1, 2010.  Ex: SCGA #888888 will be #9888888 starting in January 2010.

For approximately 5000 golfers in Southern California, their member number with a 9 in front is already being used in the GHIN system.  Those members will be notified directly by the SCGA if their member number is changing.

I will keep you updated as I get more details.

Great American golf club had another very successful trip out to La Quinta for our weekend getaway.  This year we had 36 participants who withstood the 108 degree heat to play two new courses.  Due to a big tournament at la Quinta we got moved to the Indian Wells Golf Club and Resort.  The course have been redesigned in the last 4-5 years and were lots of fun to play.  We were treated like royalty and everyone had a wonderful time. For our Friday skins game we had 6 different people win a skin with net eagles.  However, the highlight of the golf was that Frank Simone (Dana's Dad) had a hole in one on Sunday on a 158 yard par three.

I want to thank everyone who participated in this event and I look forward to next year.
