The Battle Within

by Tammy Greaton

What are the differences

from you to me
It depends on the view
it shapes what we see

You are prepared
to retire in style
I have to continue
to work for a while

Your hair is turning
to that color gray
For years to come
mine will yet stay

Your children are grown
and off on their own
My child has years
before he has flown

Beyond the years
our minds work the same
The things that we want
and can verbally name

It is the battle
you wage deep within
Between your heart and mind
you must let your heart win

Your mind wants control
over all that you do
Your heart screams to be heard
it demands a voice too

And so wages the battle
you know deep within
If your heart gains control
then your mind can not win

So where is the peace
your soul seeks to find
It waits with the love
you deny with your mind

If your mind wins
we can not be
Then I lose the peace
I can now see

The aches and the pains
we traverse in this life
Must come to something
after all the strife

Should I sit and watch
these hearts of ours bleed
Or give up the battle
to your mind indeed

The question that haunts me
and will all my day
If I turn my back
and just walk away

Just give up the battle
and say your mind wins
Does my mind take over
to choke my heart from within

Then there is always the question
my heart and mind hate to face
What if you have no battle
within taking place
