Many of the original and introduced tress have greatly enhanced the habitat for wildlife as they have matured and provided more cover and safe havens. Birds such as Robins, Thrushes, Blackbirds, Spotted Fly Catchers, Collared Doves, Wood Pigeons have nested regualarly. The variety og habitats makes this possible with Gold Crests, for example, preferring the horizontal conifers.
Regular visitors to the garden include herons at the pond after our Newts, several Green Woodpeckers extracting ants from the lawn and Great Spotted Woodpeckers attatched to tree trunks. There has been the occasional high speed attack on small birds by Sparrow Hawks
Durring Winter we leave the seed heads on Lavender plants and these are regularly invaded by flocks of up to a dozen Gold Finches. Nuts and seeds are put out in feeders all Winter and Spring and most Finches, tits, and others can be seen. On the ground Wrens are common as are Robins, Blackbirds, Thrushes and Sparrows. Sometimes a family of Grey Squirrels, up to 4 in number check out all bird feeders and other hiding places. Their acrobatics are amazing and amusing as seen daily from the conservatory
Muntjack deer are regular attractive visitors to the garden (often in pairs) but they do tend to destroy young shrubs and perennials.
