oteen is as Irish as a drunken funeral on a rainy summer day. Although we don't know where or when it was first created, what we do know is that it has been around for hundreds of years and has become an institution. However, since 1661, this fine old spirit which has gladdened the heart of many a man and woman has been made illegal, demonised and criticised. Since Charles II realised that he could not improve the Crowns coffers by taxing the ordinary Irish man for his simple taste in poteen, it has been a criminal offence in Ireland to posses or distil the "mountain dew". However , illegality has never deterred those brave people who continue to distil what is drunk and owned by THE PEOPLE OF IRELAND, throughout the land from Donegal to Kerry and Clare to Dublin. Poteen is illegal because those who are in Power have never been able to tax it. The policy in Ireland is that if you can't tax something then it is made illegal. Approximately sixty five million people claim Irish ancestry in the U.S. alone. How many of these people have heard about poteen but never tried it? How many people have brought a bottle of "Holy Water" back to the States? How many of our Irish American cousins have never had the chance to taste and experience the unique effect that is Poteen?? This is what we aim to rectify.
