What is a Money Market?
(Paraphrased from Investopedia.com)
A Money Market is an extraordinarily safe and excellent place to put
your money. Why? Because you can with draw your cash at almost any time
with little to no penalty (typically no penalty), the money is backed
by the government, financial institutions, and large corporations, and
you can earn a pretty good return on your money if it's put in the right
place.
Money markts typically are bought (traded) in large denominations.
So if you don't have $5,000 to $100,000 it's usually hard to get into
a money market. From my understanding the less you have to invest, the
less return you make. In effect this keeps out most beginning investors
in an investment vehicle that most rich people have.
Money Market Instruments can be any of the following:
- Treasury Bills
- Certificates of Deposit (CD)
- Commercial Paper
- Bankers Acceptance
- Eurodollars
- Repos
And a blend of money market instruments is called a money market mutual
fund.
Why should I put my money in the PayPal
MoneyMarket Fund if I already have in in a Savings Account and its earning
interest there?
First reason, main reason: PayPal Money Market Fund out performs. I
would say this money market is making the most when compared to any
other money market fund. And it certainly kicks any savings account
rate. For instance, my Credit Union is offering me 1.87
on my savings. It's typical for credit unions to offer higher percentages
than banks. However, this is not even enough to keep up with inflation.
Now, the PayPal MM is offering 4.22%!!!! Get excited
this is awesome. Some stocks don't even a achieve this! and that's reason
# 1.
Second reason: You get a taste of investing without the risk. The PayPal
MM has never gone below 0%. As stated earlier this is one of the safest
investments you can put your money in. Should the economy take a Great
Depression turn then you could pull your money out before the bottom
fell out. But that's highly unlikely. Most people won't say this because
they don't want to risk damaging their reputation but "IT WILL
NEVER GO BELOW 0%!" So put your money in it now.
Third Reason: Its all done online. You don't have to go anywhere.
Fourth Reason: By getting in the PPMM you automatically get all the
benefits of PayPal like sending money, paying for ebay items, receiving
money etc.
"Ok," you say "I'm convinced. What now?"
How do I set up my PayPal Money Market
Fund?
First you must have a few things. They are:
- the Internet
- Bank Account with routing number
- Social Security Number
- At least $1
1. Ok. now that you have that go to http://www.PayPal.com
and sign up.
2. next, select personal account, unless you want to
set up a premier or business account. then select United States for a
country and click continue
3. Then enter in your information, agree to a few terms.
4. Confirm that crap.
5. Next, click earn a return on your balance, agree
to a few terms and voila! You're done!
As you can see I don't have too much money in the money market. This
is partly due to a few things. One, the christmas season and two, I have
my savings money earning a higher interest rate. The next few articles
I'll write about those investment vehicles that will offer you better
returns.
