1) Bull Durham | |
![]() |
The best sports movie of all time in my opinion…blends the reality of minor league baseball and real life through the journey of up and comer Ebby Calvin “Nuke” LaLoosh (Tim Robbins) and veteran catcher Crash Davis (Kevin Costner)…add to the mix the very sexy Susan Sarandon who plays Annie Savoy, a middle-age baseball guru who is bound to have her way with the Bull’s star battery mates…this is a smart, simple, sexy film…a film that is funny in the right spots |
2) Hoosiers | |
The film that put Indiana hoops on the map…well, this and a guy by the name of Larry Bird…but this movie gives us a glimpse of how intense high school basketball is in Indiana…even in 1954 when the film is set…Gene Hackman plays Head Coach Norman Dale as he along with town drunk, Shooter (Dennis Hopper) mold a small bunch of high school boys into the a team with a shot at the state title…Gotta run that old Picket Fence play! |

3) Rocky | |
![]() |
The best down and out, small time, underdog does good movie of all time…Rocky Balboa is a small time fighter out of Philly who gets a shot at the title when Apollo Creed goes looking for a patsy…well, he gets more then he paid for…the best part for me in this movie is Rocky’s relationship with Adrian…and the way the movie doesn’t sell out for the Hollywood ending. |
4) The Natural | |
The best way to describe The Natural is a magical sports fantasy…sounds kind of silly, but it truly works…Roy Hobbs (Robert Redford) is a middle-age guy who appears out of nowhere to lead a down on their luck baseball to team to the top of the heap…he’s this kind of mysterious guy who has a history…and with his bat forged from a tree struck by lightning, he’s an unstoppable force on the diamond. |

5) Raging Bull | |
![]() |
Sits as the second best boxing movie of all time behind Rocky in my opinion…only reason is its so brutal and such a dramatic tragedy that’s its hard to feel good after watching it….but this is DeNiro at his best…many people would rank it ahead of Rocky, but not me…I prefer the feel good story….but that said this is an excellent film and very worthy of the no. 5 spot. |
6) Slapshot | |
The greatest hockey movie ever made…hands down...don’t give me Mighty Ducks or Miracle….this is the only hockey movie you ever have to know or own…a wacky rag tag bunch of misfits make up the Chiefs…led by Paul Newman’s Reggie Dunlop…the team resorts to thug style skating as they try to find success on the ice…I got a picture with the Hanson Brothers somewhere…and Ogie Ogilthrope is the greatest hockey name ever….my favorite character though is goalie Denis Lemieux…watch this and you see why…his lines are the best. |

7) Rudy | |
![]() |
The only movie that no matter how many times I watch…it makes me cry every time…I don’t know if its because it’s a true story or what…but every time…and you can all probably figure out the part…what a movie…tremendous heart…a little runt of a guy who no one believed in…he defies all the odds and makes it to Notre Dame…his dream…this one is all about dreams…chasing them and the payoff when they come true. |
8) Caddyshack | |
Not only a great golf flick, but one of the funniest movies ever made…Chevy Chase as the deadpan Ty Webb…Rodney Dangerfield as the wild and crazy Al Czervik who reeks havoc all over golf course…the late Ted Knight as Judge…Bill Murray as the groundskeeper...Carl Spackler…Licensed to Kill Gophers…and who could ever forget Spalding!...I still say the Snickers in the pool gag is one of the all-time classics…and don’t forget that catchy theme song. |

9) The Longest Yard | |
![]() |
A football drama set against the backdrop of a prison…Burt Reynolds is Paul Crewe, a former pro quarterback who is doing time…he’s called on to assemble and lead a bunch of inmates against the guards in what the Warden (Eddie Albert) hopes is a lopsided game…one were the inmates get quite the ass beating…Crewe’s dilemma is that if he throws the game for the Warden he will have his freedom…does he do it?...or does he uphold his teammates commitment…everything leading up to the game is just as good as the event itself…and as you watch the game, you can see how it influenced many other sport films in it’s hilarious style of play on the field. |
10) Eight Men Out | |
With
the third entry of a baseball movie in the top 10, I guess you know
what sport I prefer…the true story of the 1919 Black Sox scandal….the
idea that the Chicago White Sox threw the 1919 World Series after accepting
bribes….a great story and great book…John Cusack is great
as Shoeless Joe Jackson…I still don’t believe he was involved…the
stats prove it…but in the end they were all banned from the game
for life…this is their story and a story of the times…Say
It Ain’t So Joe! |
