1) Pearl Jam | |
![]() |
This
is the only band in the world that I can say I love every song of theirs.
I have yet to hear a pearl jam song that I didn't like. With their incredible
musical ability, and the colorful presence of front man Eddie Vedder,
this band has the perfect blend of elements that puts them to the top
of my list. Mike Mcready rules on the axe, and eddie's lyrics and vocals
are incomparable. Perhaps the only 90's grunge band to fall victim to
the pains of success and drugs and still be around today, making music
like they always have. |
2) The Black Crowes | |
Perhaps a lesser known band, whom a lot of people might say "I've heard of them, but I don't know any of their songs." They aren't one of the most popular bands, and I find them extremely under-rated. One of the many great bands formed by brothers, their love is shown through their music rather than their relationship. Singer Chris Robinson gives the band such a variety, and has such a great range, he can deliver the ultimate rock-love song and then go right into a screamin, hair raising song that no one can touch. My favorite of their music is their acoustic rock songs, like the ones found on "Shake your Money Maker", "She Talks to Angels" and "Sister Luck". But there is no end to my love for this band and all of their song styles.

3) Jet | |
![]() |
One
of the few newer bands on my list, Jet has been able to give me what
I've been craving for years, a new band that has all the qualities of
a great rock band. We are in some desperate times for music, and it
is the few bands like Jet that keep me going. Another band that includes
a pair of brothers, the unification of the music is one that is hard
to find these days. Despite only having one album out, I can assure
you that they are just beginning and they will have a long career. Playing
songs that can be classified as classic rock, soft rock, and flat out
rock, they have all the right stuff to meet your rock needs.

4) Modest Mouse | |
Despite
having an incredibly different sound than most of the bands I've heard,
they have something that appeals to me. I can't figure it out, but I
like it. some of their songs are just so bizarre, just sounding like
a bunch of instruments being banged together, but it works. Isaac Brock
has a one of a kind singing style that wouldn't be classified as grunge
or heavy metal, but rather its own alternative type manner. This trio
can perform a great soft song with some soft acoustic, violin, and piano
the touches your heart (like blame it on the tetons) and then do a heavy
scream along song theat just makes you want to go out and kick some
ass (like dance hall). They have everything, and with great lyrics to
back them up puts them on my list. |

5) Counting Crows | |
![]() |
A band
that I just recently started to get into, they have some great popular
songs like "Hanginaround" and "Mr. Jones", but they
also have a long list of phenomenal songs that you are likely to have
never heard of. Lead-singer Adam Duritz has a unique "lonely sounding"
voice, and appearance, sporting the dreadlocks, that some find unusual
and disturbing. But I think that this only adds to the quality of their
music and their image. |
6) Red Hot Chili Peppers | |
A
band im sure you're all familiar with, the chili peppers have over 20
years of great songs and endless radio hits. With great albums like
Blood Sugar Sex Magik, and Californication, they've never been afraid
to reveal themselves musically or physically. The roots of the band
lay in a friendship forged by three school friends, Anthony Kiedis,
Michael Balzary, and Hillel Slovak. Balzary changed his name to Flea,
and soon became one of the greatest bassists ever. One of the main reasons
I like this band, besides their music, is their ability to stay together
and keep releasing great music through difficulty with drugs, deaths,
and people leaving the band. Their rock/ rap style of music has phenomenal
guitar riffs, bass lines, and vocals. The chili peppers rule. |

7) Third Eye Blind | |
![]() |
Drawing
my attention right from the start in spring of '97 with the hit Semi-Charmed
Life, their post-grunge/ rock music hits the spot. I remember doing
a music project on them in like, 4th grade. This was one of my first
real "favorite bands". Another under-rated group that has
many great tunes, and many great albums, if you have not experienced
3eb I urge you to pick up an album immediately. Arion Salazar was my
influence to start playing the bass, and between him and former counting
crows drummer Brad Hargraves the background music is one of my favorites.
A band that took time off from the tour scene to play benefit concerts
for numerous organization, they are a band for the people, they play
the right music for the right cause. |
8) Foo Fighters | |
Originated
by Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl after Kurt Cobain's death, Foo Fighters
quickly became a successful post-grunge/ alternative group. I love the
hits like "Learn to Fly" and "Hero" (written by
dave for Cobain), but I also love many of their non released songs like
"Stitches" "M.I.A." and "Stacked Actors".
Needless to say, all of their tunes are great, and Grohl has humor,
and an unparalleled voice that makes the band who they are. |

9) Los Lonely Boys | |
![]() |
One
of my newest favorite bands, hailed from Texas this trio of brothers
play music that is literally half Spanish half rock. Some of their lyrics
are even in Spanish. Henry Garza, lead singer and guitarist, is one
of the best guistarist of the last decade, and I say of all time. In
just about every song on their self titled album he has atleast 3 solos,
and each one seizes to amaze me. I think if there was one song I had
to listen to the rest of my life it might be that song Heaven. Its just
awesome. These guys rule. Any band that Willie Nelson himself says is
his favorite is up there with me. |
10) The Darkness | |
Another recent band, these British guys are most often related to as Queen imitators. They sort of are, but they've got great music and enough originality to be called great. Despite only having their one cd out, there isn't a bad song on it, and the high pitched lead vocals of Jeremy Hawkins drew me in instantly. Another band with outstanding guitar, their endless catchy tunes have held a spot in my cd player for months. This group is awesome. What a superb album and band, hopefully they won't be leaving any time soon. |
