Don’t let legislation dictate how we ride. Let riders dictate the legislation. Mandatory helmet use laws for adults have resurfaced many times since 1975. They were brought back in front of the CT lawmakers in 1983, 1984, 1985, 1987, 1991, 1993, 1995, 2003, 2005,2008, and sure to return in 2009. Similar to the efforts of Donald Pittsley in the mid 70s, each time a bill is proposed grass roots groups and individuals have to work relentlessly to fight the potential new legislation. In addition to helmet laws for adults these same groups and individuals had to fight other anti-motorcycle legislation as well. In 2003 the Bill SB-79 was introduced proposing banning children from riding on a motorcycle. Just recently in 2006 the Connecticut Motorcycle Noise Bill HB 5487 was introduced that would rescind the registration of any motorcycle having two or more noise violations or warnings. |
Another bit of anti-motorcycle legislation that continues to be fought is an unfair law that allows group health insurance providers to refuse coverage to people only because they ride a motorcycle and would otherwise qualify for coverage Without the continuing work of these groups and individuals these laws would without doubt be in force today eliminating the riding freedoms we now enjoy. The unsuccessful bills mentioned were defeated or repealed due in a large part to the hard work and contributions of rider advocacy groups. But you can bet every one of these proposed laws will find their way back in front of the lawmakers time and time again year after year. We all need make sure they are defeated each and every time.
