Single
[To The Top]

Single cover Dreamlover was the first single from Mariah's upcoming album Music Box. It was released in August 1993, entering the Hot 100 charts at number 13. In the next few weeks it went up from number 9 to 3 and it finally reached number 1 on September 4. It remained there for eight weeks... The single was also featuring one of Mariah's previously unreleased songs 'Do You Think Of Me'.
The song was produced and arranged by Mariah Carey, Dave Hall (Untouchables Entertainment) and Walter Afanasieff, who worked with Mariah on many songs. Album cover Mariah once again showed her talent in singing (by reaching those high octaves), but she also made a beautiful lyrics for the song. The lyrics was probably pointing at her (now ex-) husband Tommy Mottola
Inside the melody there is also a sample of a David Porter's song 'Blind Alley' (Irving Music Inc.). David Porter was a soul singer of the sixties, who also worked with Isaac Hayes. Beautiful melody in Dreamlover is created by a synthesizer and accompanied by Walter Afanasieff on Hammond Organ. All that made the song a unique summer hit, not just for the year 93, but for many more to come... Dreamlover is probably one of the most often Mariah's songs played on the radios (along with Without You).

Music video
[To The Top]

There probably aren't many Mariah fans out there who haven't seen her video for Dreamlover at least once, because it's probably one of her most popular videos showed on tv.

Dreamlover video was the first video released from Mariah's third album Music Box. The video was filmed in the upstate New York, near to Mariah's estate. It is filled with the spirt of the hot summer days.

Hip-hop dancers The opening shoots start with the scene of Mariah swimming deep in the water. She's dressed in a blue jeans shorts and pinkish shirt. The next scene is showing the hip-hop dancers in a grassy field. Mariah starts singing, standing behind a black horse. She's wearing blue shirt and a blue jeans shorts. The camera cuts to some scenes of wildflowers and than again showing Mariah, when is lying in the grass and singing. Mariah in a hotair ballon There are some great close-ups of Mariah's face, when she's holding a blue flower. Later we can see her in a hot air ballon, danicng in a field, joking around with her friends, swimming in a stream along with her dog Jack, who actually got his first part in one of Mariah's videos. The video ends up with Mariah and some of her friends lying in the grass.

Here is what Mariah said about the shooting of the Dreamlover music video:

Mariah Carey for NBC Special 1993 (November 25th)
Mariah smilling" I had a lot of fun doing the video for Dreamlover, because we did it upstate New York, where we have a house up there and... It was just so much better than doing a video in the studio or creating some fake kind of scenarios, like I always had to do in the videos. It was fun, everything in the video, I had a great time doing all : swimming - I love swimming, so I loved doing that... I mean some things are more fun than... The waterfall, that I was swimming in, was very cold. And the director actually jumped in, because I wouldn't jump in, so she said 'I am gonna jump in and if I jump in you can jump in...' So she jumped in the water too... it was fun. My dog Jack was swimming with me.. He's like crazy, you can't keep him out of the water, so I was swimming and he just jumped in, so we kept him in the video. Mariah in a hotair ballon We had a lot of crazy things going on, because I went up in a hot air balloon and they didn't wanna let me go up, because the wind was too high. And I was like 'I am going'... And so everybody was a little bit nervous about a few things... Because we wanted to do something really light, and really... you know, not taking this so seriously.... "

The lyrics
[To The Top]

Dreamlover
Lyrics: Mariah Carey
Music: Mariah Carey, Dave Hall

I need a lover to give me
The kind of love
That will last always
I need somebody uplifting
To take me away

I want a lover who knows me
Who understands how I feel inside
Someone to comfort and hold me
Through the long lonely nights
Till the dawn
Why don't you take me away

Dreamlover come rescue me
Take me up take me down
Take me anywhere you want to baby now
I need you so desperately
Won't you please come around
'Cause I wanna share forever with you baby

I don't want another pretender
To disillusion me one more time
Whispering words of forever
Playing with my mind

I need someone to hold on to
The kind of love that won't fly away
I just want someone to belong to
Everyday
Of my live
Always
So come and take me away

Dreamlover come rescue me
Take me up take me down
Take me anywhere you want to baby now
I need you so desperately
Won't you please come around
'Cause I wanna share forever with you baby
