| Title in 1792: 2eme Bn, Regiment d'Infanterie de Ligne Angoumois (Nr 80) | |
 | Revolutionary Campaigns:From 1792-96 the Regiment initially served in l'Armee des Alpes but then both battalions were transferred to Bayonne to l'Armee des Pyrenees-Occidentales. Together with the chasseurs Cantabres they were the only regular troops in that army at the opening of hostilities. On 30 April 1793, the Spanish surprised the sentries at the camp at Sarre. The raw volunteers scattered in panic but, the legendary capitaine La Tour d'Auvergne was ordered to take 100 men of Angoumois's grenadier company and stop the Spanish advance at all costs. Capitaine La Tour d'Auvergne's small command took post on a small hill from which they unleashed a devastating volley at the Spanish at a distance of twenty paces. The Spanish were halted for a moment but regained their composure and continued the advance. This small command withdrew in the greatest of order back to a position of safety at Ustaritz where the volunteers had finally been rallied. On 22 June 1793, the grenadiers gained a measure of revenge at the bloody clash of Montegne de Louis XIV and they were distinguished in their conduct at the la Croix des Bouquets and at Urrugne; 23 July 1793. The first amalgamation (29 November 1793) the Regiment was renamed the 2eme Bn, 148eme Demi-Brigade-de-Bataille together with the 7eme and 11eme Bns, Volunteers de la Gironde. In the clash at Sans-Culottes; 5 February 1794, the Regiment scattered four battalions of Spanish Marines and the Irish Regiment Ultonia. The second amalgamation (19 February 1797) it became the 34eme Demi-Brigade-de-Ligne. For further information see the Regiment d'Infanterie de Ligne Champagne (Nr 7). |
