Regiment d'Infanterie de Ligne Champagne (Nr 7)






The Regiment was raised on 29 May 1759 by Jean de Biran, De Gohas. On 18 April 1776 the Regiment was split in two, the 2eme and 4eme Bns, retaining the old title and number. The 2eme Bn, becoming the 1er and the 4eme, the 2eme battalion.

Revolutionary Campaigns:

At the end of 1791, both battalions were in Dax and Navarreins, near Bayonne when the majority of their officers emigrated to Spain. After this episode the 1er Bn, was sent to Pau and the 2eme to Auch. In 1792 the 1er Bn, was sent to the Department of Vienne to take part in the conquest of Savoy under General de Montesquiou. In 1793 both battalions were in Carcassonne to form part of l'Armee des Pyrenees-Orientales. On 20 April the Spanish invadec Roussillon and defeated the French at the clash of Ceret, the raw volunteers of the French force fleeing the field. The 1er Bn, Champagne managed to delay the Spaniards. In May, 4 companies of the 1er Bn, were placed in Fort Bellegarde under a Lt-Colonel Boisbrule, where they were beseiged by the Spanish. The Fort held out until 24 June. Elements of the battalion were present at the skirmish of Mas de Serre; the Legion de Pyrenees fled before the Spanish cavalry however the future Marshal of France, Perignon placed himself at the head of the grenadiers of Champagne who saved the day. Distinguished in its conduct at the French defeat at the battle of Truillas; 22 September 1793 where it suffered heavy losses and at the recapture of Villelongue; 19 December 1793. It was also present at the French defeat at the battle of Collioure; 20 December 1793. In 1794 it fought at the battle of Boulou; 1 May 1794, and the siege and capture of Collioure; 2-26 May 1794, the battle of Campmany; 17-20 November 1794, where the Spanish suffered a crushing defeat which effectively ended their invasion of France. Also participated in the siege and capture of the port of Rosas; 21 November 1974 - 3 February 1795. In 1795, as a result of the first amalgamation (19 June 1795), it became the 2eme Bn, 13eme Demi-Brigade-de-Bataille together with the 5eme and 6eme Bns, Volunteers de la Gironde. The second algamation (29 July 1798) saw the formation become the 80eme Demi-Brigade-de-Ligne together with 2eme and 3eme Bns, Demi-Brigade du Jura et de l'Herault, the 3eme Bn, 7eme Provisional Demi-Brigade, the 1er Bn, Volunteers de Gravilliers/Paris, part of the 3eme Bn, de Vaucluse and a detachment of the 19eme Demi-Brigade-de-Bataille. It operated throughout 1798 in l'Armee de l'Interieur. From 1799-1800 it formed part of l'Armee d'Italie and fought at the battle of Novi; 15 August 1799 in Lemoine's Division. In 1800 it fought with the Corps des Alpes under Tharreau and was present at the skirmish at Susa; 22 May 1800. In 1803 it became the 34eme Regiment d'Infanterie de Ligne.
