On Personalities

The pioneer spirit
On General Grant

He seemed jealous of all the army commanders, because in years,

former rank, and experience, he thought he was our superior.

He offered to go out and show me that the dead men of his

advance division were lying farther out than any of Hooker's.

My habit has been to note in pencil the suggestions of critics, and

to examine the substance of their differences; for critics must

differ from the author, to manifest their superiority.

We realize to-day that the vigorous men who control Kansas,

Nebraska, Dakota,  Montana, Colorado, etc., etc., were soldiers of the civil war
