Honey - Boy is one of MANY orange or orange and white cats that seemed to be strays in our neighborhood. For awhile I thought that one of our neighbors had these cats, but just let them roam all over the place, never brought them inside, letting them breed indiscriminately. That made me sad, but I didn't think there was anything I could do. Honey and Muffin (below) were the first of these cats to respond to my attempts to tame them. Once I got them to where I could touch them whenever I wanted, I took them to the vets for shots and neutering. (Nov 1999) Now I wish I had done more of this over the last few years... There remains one white and orange tom to try to catch and get neutered...but he is too skittish, now!
Update: July 2000 - Orange and white has been trapped for neutering! |

Although Muffin initially seemed "wilder" than Honey, she has become extremely tame...I think that her youth has contributed to her adapting to human contact pretty rapidly. She purrs like crazy now when she is petted, and kneads the air, or any nearby object.
I often wonder who Muffin's mom was...since there does not seem to be a stray female around, presently. I joke sometimes that Honey was her "mom". He sure acts like it! It really endeared me to him, that he was taking such good care of her. One unusual thing about Muffin is that she has ZERO interest in toys, or in playing. Even the trick of dragging a string along the ground in front of her elicits no interest. She just wants to be petted, and squirm around on the ground, then walk away from you, walk back, and get more petting.
UPDATE: Muffin has settled in wonderfully, and is now "one of the girls". She is a very smart kitty, and by watching the others has learned to play (mostly with Grace's discarded toys!) She knows her own mind, and WILL NOT be picked up. She does enjoy greeting you by finding a high place to perch and touching her nose to your nose. It seems to re-assure her somehow. A real darling. |
