April-May Nature Photography feature

 

A Quickie Feature by Greyhawk

As a nature photographer, I am lucky to be living in Colorado where there is beautiful and exotic scenery within a short distance. This is true of many places in the world, but what if you live in a big city; thinking that you just don't have any great nature area's to go to without taking a vacation and spending a lot of money? I am going to skip over all the state parks, city parks, green-ways, plus other great spots to photograph nature close by! As I have done on some news groups, am going to ask... What about your own backyard? You live there and can control what's in it and what visits it in many cases. Not only is nature everywhere, it is very much in your back yard. You just have to learn how to see it!

I am putting this together as I go and am going to only use a few images that are currently in my computer as a very "small example" of the many nature opportunities that exist or can exist in your own back yard. There will now be a slight pause while I check to see what I have in my files that can be used in this feature.(Who says you have to plan out writing an article? <G>)

 

 

Sorry about the time. I  just had too many different backyard images in my computer to choose from! Starting with pure nature, here we have a weed, and I should have shown this weed much larger, because the back light brought out the many beautiful greens it had during springtime..

  

 

 

 

Lets stay with weeds for a while! Some of these pest are kind of nice looking. That is if you look at them with the right attitude. .

 

 

 

Maybe the Dandelions in your backyard seem to be eight foot tall ?

 

 

 

You may even want to look at these seeds up close! The shallow depth of field on this was deliberate. It could have been made with every detail tack sharp. but this would have taken the circular white effect out of it and lost the softness  that you normally see. with your eyes.

 

 

 

Tired of shooting weeds and besides the weather has changed. How about a close up of snow melting off of your Spruce. Hmmm,..This image looks a little like something else.

 

 

 

Use your magic marker pen to show people what you saw in that shot!(The ole hawk said with a grin)

 

 

 

It is or is almost spring, so along come the ice storms in some parts of the world. By the way, this Weeping Willow tree was in my neighbors yard. But I did shoot it from my yard! This is the top 20 feet of it.

 

 

 

How about taking a shot of last summers leaves left on the rose bush during the winter? ( remember the leaves still being on my rose bush later)

 

 

 

It's now spring and out come the little 1/2 inch long things. You can always shoot it with the camera before shooting it with bug spray.

 

 

 

Just like the flowers, and foliage, the birds are also at their most colorful peak in the spring. Yes, this is the only way I can show the hands of man on "this" site. That is by using it as an example of how to get birds into your back yard. Thats right folks,..put up some feeders!

 

 

 

Now that you have the feeders up, the birds should be coming to your backyard studio. Just take your shot away from the feeders, when they are on a close by limb or in this case driftwood.(Many birders plant their yards with plants that will attract certain birds.)

 

 

 

A closing thought. The purist may call this a cultivated plant. I did plant it about 20 years ago, but it has received no water, no sprays, no fertilizer and no pruning from me for the last 6-7 years. It buds and grows as it wishes without my help or interference. In my yard, everything is wild nowadays. I do mow the grass when the neighbors start complaining! ( 4-5 times a summer)

 

Although in a strange mood and rambling, I have been trying to make a point. You do not have to travel or go to exotic places to shoot nature. In fact I enjoyed shooting and like some of these images as much the Great Blue Herons or other waders that I have shot on federal reserves. Nature is all around you! The camera is a tool. First you have to learn how to use that tool properly, and then you learn how to see nature and see the light.
