“So, how long have you guys been together?”

That’s the one question we get asked most often and seems to be the one question we have the most difficulty answering. We can tell you about how we met, but probably not the date. Sometime in 1999 or 2000, at the 651 Club in Fort Worth, Texas, John was actually out on his first date with Mac, a friend of Eddy’s, with John he began a relationship with shortly thereafter. Eddy had gotten out of a relationship recently, himself. John recalls thinking Eddy was cute, but not giving it any more thought given the circumstances of the evening. Eddy recalls thinking John was handsome, and that he had a lot of hair (it was kind of full and curly back then). He didn’t think much of the encounter, either.

Over the next year or so, Eddy would email Mac or John, just to keep in touch. Eventually, John’s relationship with Mac went sour and he and Eddy went out a few times. One of the first dates was to see John in a performance of a Garland, Texas, local theater production of Funny Girl. John was the Ziegfield Tenor and was awesome. Unfortunately, Eddy was reluctant to get into a relationship, still gun-shy after the disaster of his last attempt over a year before. So he put John off more often than not, and their dates were sometimes a month apart

November of 2000
Eddy came down with a viral illness that pretty much tossed him on his butt. He was out sick from work for a week and had pretty much stopped eating, not being able to keep much down. John just happened to call during the low point in Eddy’s illness. Eddy asked him to come over and help him out. John did just that, bringing food and drink with him. He was a perfect gentleman and slept overnight on the couch. It was just what Eddy needed. John later recalled that he’d decided that the night he called would’ve been the last time if things had been different. So Eddy and John started dating more regularly from that point.

February 2001
John invited Eddy to go to Big Bend National Park in southwest Texas. Eddy had just been to a medical conference in Colorado, and John picked him up at the airport on his return. It just happened to be Valentine’s Day. Eddy climbed into John’s pickup and was greeted by candy and flowers! The long trip to Big Bend, the 3 lovely days in the park, and the long trip back to Dallas provided ample opportunity to talk about life, the universe and everything from relationships to crappy old boyfriends. The trip home was the day we had “The Talk” about where the relationship was going. That’s when the relationship truly took off.

September 2001
We returned to Big Bend with a bunch of bear buddies. On a hike up the Lost Mine Trail, John surprised Eddy with rings for the both of them. Eddy’s has an amber stone and John’s has an onyx, both set in a Celtic design silver ring.

This was the day John and Eddy had their commitment ceremony. You can read all about it by clicking here.

September, 2002
Eddy received a phone call from a company in Portland, Oregon. We had fallen in love with the area after taking a trip to a bear event in June 2001. We had already decided to move there, but the long range plan was for 2 years. The company had found Eddy’s resume on Monster.com and after two phone interviews, decided to fly him up for an interview. Needless to say, the company was very impressed and two days after his return to Dallas, Eddy was offered a job with the company. Since the company was needing a quick decision, we thoroughly discussed the offer and decided it was too good of an omen to pass up. Eddy moved up to Oregon in October, 2002, and John followed in January.

May 2003
It’s been a struggle, but we’re making it. The economy’s not that great here and it took John a while to land a job, but we’re finally making ends meet. We just can’t tie them in a knot, yet.
