Baits

Worms - Good bait for small fishes. But because worms are usually not as firm as other bait, they tend to let go of the hook quite easily.

Shellfishes - Mussels/Cateyes/Pipis/Tuatua etc. are excellent general baits for many kinds of fishes. Snappers especially like them.

Squids - Good bait for snappers etc. Not suitable for catching small fishes.

Bonitos - Excellent all-purpose bait for basically any kind of fish species found in the Auckland region. Cut in small pieces, they are good to lure small fishes like young kahawai, jack mackerels, and yellow-eyed mullets. Cut in large pieces, they are attractive to decent sized snappers, kahawai, and many other fishes alike.

Tarakihi - Good all-purpose bait for all fishes. Because of it firm texture, it can last longer than many other baits. Fishes cannot bit away the bait so easily.

Mullets - Excellent bait for snappers! Repeat, excellent!! Other fish species however may find it less alluring.

Pilchards - Ageneral all-purpose bait, but may not yield good result if not filleted.

Pipers - Excellent bait for kingfishes and snappers.

Other baits - Trevallies, other fish flesh, snails, bread, sausages, beef, animal guts (livers, etc.) and many other unknown bait... Anyone who likes to share his/her experience on using these baits, please email me, and I will post it on the web (selectively, that is).
