Joseph Campbell signed on with the Defense Intelligence Agency almost 20 years ago. At the time, he was only in his early thirties, but since then, he has progressed through the ranks and become the senior operative in Eastern Europe.
Campbell has strong ethics, and feels a devout dedication to his country and people. Due to his time in service, he has also picked up a strong following of his own. He surrounds himself with people who feel as he does, and they pledge their service to him with thorough dedication. Even though the war has made things incredibly difficult, Campbell continues to persevere. When the going got tough, and funds began to dwindle, Campbell began to pull some strings and set up his intelligence network.
In the last several months, the movement of hostile troops in the area has kept Campbell and his men in hiding, evading any prying eyes. It wasn't until about a month ago that Campbell's men heard of a rogue Soviet General who was on his way into the area. Campbell dispatched a couple of his top agents to infiltrate the Soviet troops that were entering the area, in an attempt to learn about what was going on. The information that was soon relayed to Campbell made his blood run cold. The commanding officer of the Soviet troops, a General Stehnkov, was waging his own private war against the Allies. Not even the Soviet Command authorized his actions. Fearing that Stehnkov's actions may well cause the capture or death of a great many American soldiers, Campbell dispatched a runner to relay this information to SACEUR.
Unfortunately, word has reached Campbell that SACEUR will not be able to promptly respond to General Stehnkov's forces without further information. Campbell, fearing the worst as more and more troops enter the area, has decided to take matters into his own hands, in an effort to save the lives of troops that SACEUR would willing throw away. Campbell has placed "eyes" around the area, looking for any American or Allied forces that may be recruited to help in the coming operation. He knows that his men are incapable of dealing with Stehnkov, but he has hopes that enough combat soldiers may be found to tilt the odds into the favor of the Allies, at least until SACEUR can respond accordingly.
Joseph Campbell is 53 years old, and stands a little shy of 6 feet tall. He is slender and rather frail looking, even sickly looking, but this is largely his normal appearance. It has been helpful in allowing him to escape capture, as most people don't think him capable of some actions that he does. He has light brown eyes and receding gray hair. Due to the fact that he's spent so much time in Eastern Europe, he has a Polish accent to his normal English-like speech. Campbell is quite intelligent, and has a fair amount of strength in him, which is evident when he shakes hands with people. His grip is strong and sure.
Campbell's people, though good at their job of infiltration and information gathering, are not trained in the use of military weapons or tactics. Most are locals or hired help from other countries. He has a couple of Germans, an Italian, and even a Ukrainian working for him, and he trusts them all implicitly. His men carry mostly only hidden pistols or knives, and shun direct confrontation. While they are not highly trained in combat, they can defend themselves, and are very good at evading capture. And while Campbell and his men may not be able to help anyone militarily, they can provide more than ample intelligence on the General's activities.
