As with any vehicle, a buggy can't go round a corner fast without skidding. You will probably skid of you are doing more than about 15mph. Slowing down before a corner often helps!

learning it

  1. Turn the buggy sharply upwind just before the mark.
  2. When you have lost just enough speed to roll round the corner without skidding, start your turn.
  3. Try to link the scrub and turn into a smooth 'pendulum' motion.

Red starts behind and downwind of Yellow. He scrubs speed before the turn and appears to loose ground, but now he can turn more tightly. The acceleration he gets from his skid-free turn gives him the speed to overtake and get upwind of Yellow.

when to use it

When you approach a turning mark fast on a and wish to exit on a beam reach or close reach.

Don't use it if you are exiting onto a broad reach or run. Simply take the corner wide to keep your speed without slidding.

perfecting it

Practice the timing so that you don't loose too much or too little speed.

Set yourself a small figure of 8 couse, and use the lap-time on your stopwatch to compare diffenet jibe techniques.

Practice approaching and leaving the mark on different wind directions. Will be surprised how much this affects the amount you need to scrub.

Very effective when combined with a flat turn. However with a stalled, twitchy kite behind you while you are doing a controlled skid there's a lot going on here! Practice each part on it's own first.
