Below are some tips and tricks I use with my Petz program. You can also find some helpful tidbits on my FAQ page.

Bringing Back Runaway and Returned Petz

Go into the Petz 3, 4, or 5 folder, which can be found under C:\Program Files\P.F. Magic\Petz 3(or 4) or C:\Program Files\Ubi Soft\Studio Mythos\Petz 5. To bring back a runaway, click on the RunAway Petz folder. Find the pet that you want back, highlight it, and click cut. Go back to the Petz folder, and open the Returned Petz folder. Paste the dog file in there. Next, highlight it and cut it again. Go back to the Petz folder and open the Adopted Petz folder. Paste the pet in there, and you're done. This method can't bring all pets back, but it will work for quite a few. If this doesn't bring your pet back, let me know, so I can give you more help.

Bringing back a returned pet works the same way. Go into the Petz 3, 4, or 5 folder and click on the Returned Petz folder. Find your pet in there, highlight it, and click cut. Go back to the Petz folder and open the Adopted Petz folder and paste the pet in there. This method will always work!

Note: Bringing back a pet in this manner will cause a dialogue box to pop up the next time you start up Petz 3 or 4. Just click OK. It's nothing to worry about.

Making Petz Fall in Love

Pick two pets you want to fall in love. They will need to be adults of opposite genders, and they can't be spayed or neutered. (You can't breed a dog with a cat, either.) Bring them to a room where there are no distractions; I usually use the Toy Closet (Petz 3 or 4 only) or the Family Room. Give them a few squirts with the love spray, and put some heart pillows on the ground. Bring out the music box and play a few love songs. You'll need to put the music box away if they get too into the music and start dancing. Then put the stuff away and wait. If they fall asleep or start fighting, bring out the love spray again and squirt them. Sooner or later, they will be in love, although it may not happen right away.

Posing

Pick a pet that you want to pose and take it to a room where there are no distractions. Pick it up and watch it spin. When the pet is in a position with its legs aligned, put it back down, and start taking pictures quickly by hitting the space bar. It may do tricks or whine or even do nothing at all. Just keep taking pictures. They'll soon get the idea and pose for you. You can also get some cats to pose by giving them a squirt with the love spray when their feet are aligned. Don't worry if your pets won't pose for you right away- it might take several photo sessions. Just keep working on it, and soon you'll have a Supreme Grand Champion!

Adding Songs to the Music Box

The Petz music box will only support wavs. If you already have some wavs on your computer that you want in the music box, go to the Songz folder. This is found at C:\Program Files\P.F. Magic\Petz 3 (or 4)\Resource\Songz or C:\Program Files\Ubi Soft\Studio Mythos\Petz 5\Resource\Songz and put them in there. If you don't have wav.s, here's how to get some. Right click on the speaker symbol in the system tray. Then click on Open Volume Controls in the menu that pops up. Click on Options, then Properties. Switch the radio button to Recording then click OK. It varies here depending on where you're getting your wavs from. If you want to take part of a song from a CD, put the check mark in Line-In and exit. If you have another sound file on your computer that's not in wav format, put the check mark in Mixer and exit. Open up the Sound Recorder by clicking Start, Programs, Accessories, Entertainment, Sound Recorder. Next, put your CD in or open up your other sound file. If you're using a CD, be sure to use the CD player that comes with Windows. Play the song, and hit the record button whenever you want to start recording. The length of the recording should be about 50 seconds. Afterwards, you can modify the file in the Sound Recorder. When you're satisfied, save it in the Songz folder.

Note: If you want your song to make your pets fall in love, be sure to save it the Songz folder with the word "Love" in its name. For example, I put the song "Can't Get Enough of You Baby" in my music box and named it "LoveEnough" to make my pets fall in love.

Changing the Start Up Screen

Whenever you start up Petz, a screen comes up while the game loads. If you've noticed, there's a tip or a saying in the yellow loading bar. You can add in some of your own tips if you want. To do this, go to C:\Program Files\P.F. Magic\Petz 3 (or 4)\Resource or C:\Program Files\Ubi Soft\Studio Mythos\Petz 5\Resource. Open up the file "dogzsplash" if you just have Dogz, "catzsplash" if you just have Catz, or "petzsplash" if you have both Dogz and Catz. Scroll to the bottom of the file and add some messages of your own. When you're finished, change the number of messages at the top of the file, so it's correct. That's it! Your new messages may not show up right away depending on how far down the list you are, but they will show up eventually!

Making Natural Petz With Hexed Traits

After a while, it's easy to get bored with the original traits Petz gives you. Here's a way you can add to your pets' gene pool. You'll need a hex editor and some knowledge of hexing. Before you begin you must back up all your breed files and read my hexing disclaimer too. To start, decide what new characteristics you'd like to see in your pets. Check out my hexing page for some ideas. Now you have to pick what breeds you want these new traits in. You need to use breeds that are in the pets that you already own, so check out your pets' family trees to get this information. Open up the breed files in your hex editor and use it put your new traits in the files. When you're finished, just save your changes. Don't rename the breed or change its byte. That's it! All you have to do is breed your pets like crazy to see your new traits. After your satisfied, you can put the original breeds back in the game. This way, your pets' puppies and kittens are still considered natural if they have no hexed ancestors, but they carry your new hexed characteristics. Pretty nifty!
