ROM tables for the 3 Grundig radios which are equipped with these.

Owners of any of these sets may think they are unlikely to find much of interest here, but if you have a Satellit 500 or 700, read on. Also, if you are considering buying one of these, you may find this useful. Owners of sets with programmable memories may want to try these frequencies to programme their sets for these broadcasters

A ROM table is a Read Only Memory of factory programmed station settings. Each of these 3 radios not only has the frequency stored, but also an alphanumeric tag, so you know who the frequency was programmed for.

As experienced shortwave listeners will know, broadcasters move around the shortwave band, during the 24 hour cycle due to the effects of light and dark on propagation, from summer to winter for the same reason, and on an 11 year cycle due to sunspot activity. Consequently, not all frequencies for a broadcaster will work at any one time. That is why Grundig have included so many frequencies for each broadcaster. Furthermore, other changes can take place in a station's output, due to cost cutting, political changes, and so on. The Radio Moscow frequencies, for example, are almost all useless now. Fortunately, all 3 radios have user programmable memories too, so you can work around these changes. Visit the websites of the broadcasters you are interested in for up-to-date frequencies for your part of the world. These are generally updated at 6 monthly intervals, in March & October.

The radios appear in chronological order of going on sale.

Each radio's ROM table listing below is also accessible directly from the radio's own page on this site, where applicable. All frequencies are in kHz.

Satellit 500

The first Grundig radio with a ROM table, though 3 basic versions of this set were made: The international version, with SW coverage of 1612-30000 kHz and no ROM table, the "500 Italia" with reduced coverage to meet local legislation, (SW: 3900-26100 kHz, LW 148-302 kHz.) and again, no ROM table, & the "500 Professional", sold only in Germany, with SW coverage of 1612-26100 kHz, plus a 156 frequency, 40 station ROM table of factory programmed frequencies, with alphanumeric display. From December 1990, the "500 professional" had full 1612-30000 kHz SW coverage, and all versions had the same ROM table.

To check which version you have, if you don't know already, switch the set off, key "050251" and press "Store". The set will come on in Test mode, and the alpha section of the LCD panel will display the version, "*INT", "ITAL", or "PROF".

It is possible to make early versions of the "International" and "Italia" access it's ROM table, the modification involving the connection of an existing diode. To see details, click here.

To check if the ROM table works on your set, tap in a ROM number, like "01" and press "Memory". If it is enabled, the set will tune to the first frequency in that table, and a ROM flag will appear in the display. Incidentally, if your radio doesn't have Last Station Memory, ie/ it doesn't come on tuned to the last station you listened to, then either the lithium memory backup battery has failed, or the set did not have this facility. If it never did have it, it is from an early batch, before November 1989, so unless it is a "Professional" it won't have a ROM table.

The Satellit 500 is the only set of the 3 listed to have ROM frequencies from LW & MW, as well as SW. The 500 is also the only set to not keep the ROM memory active if you tune away from the frequency. With the Satellit 700 or YB500, if you tune away, then press "Memory scan" the radio will return to the last ROM frequency accessed. The Satellit 500 however, will tune to the first active programmable memory slot. To access the ROM again, you have to key zero and another one or two numbers from 1 to 40 to re-gain access to the ROM. "Memory scan" will then move through the broadcasters, and "search" will move through the frequencies for that broadcaster.

Satellit 700

The second Grundig radio to have a ROM table, this set has 120 frequencies, the first 12 groups of 8 covering 9 broadcasters. (See below, for ROM 0.12 to 0.15) The ROM is active on all variants of the 700.

Each table has 8 frequencies.

ROM 0.1: - Deutsche Welle

ROM 0.2: - Deutsche Welle ROM 0.3: - Radio Austria International ROM 0.4: - Swiss Radio International ROM 0.5: - Radio Netherland ROM 0.6: - Radio France International ROM 0.7: - Radio Televisione Italiana ROM 0.8: - BBC London ROM 0.9: - BBC London ROM 0.10: - Radio Moscow World Service ROM 0.11: - Radio Moscow World Service ROM 0.12: - Radio Japan To access ROM tables 0.13, 0.14 & 0.15, MW stepping must be set to 10kHz, the USA standard, using the menu option. They are then as follows:

ROM 0.13: - "Europe"

ROM 0.14: - "Orient" ROM 0.15: - "Mid East" At some point in production, probably around 1994, Grundig started supplying Satellit 700's with some frequencies already programmed into chip one, these were of course over-writeable by the user. It's not clear if these were included in US models, (as many of the frequencies covered are LW and MW frequencies in Europe, unlikely to be heard easily in the US) but certainly GB models, and most likely European and Italia models were supplied pre-programmed. The chip must have been written either in a Satellit 700 using the copy function, or, more likely, in a memofile programmer, before being soldered into the radio's circuit board. Medels so equipped included a letter detailing the stations covered, which is reproduced below:

Yacht Boy 500

The third and most recently introduced Grundig radio with a ROM table, this set is equipped with 90 frequencies for 9 broadcasters. The frequencies are very similar to the Satellit 700, except for Radio Moscow, due to major changes there after the 700's release. The Rom is active on both variants of the YB500.

ROM 1: - Deutsche Welle (16 frequencies):

ROM 2: - BBC London External Services (the World Service) (16 frequencies): ROM 3: - Radio Austria International (8 frequencies): ROM 4: - Swiss Radio International (7 frequencies): ROM 5: - Radio Netherland (8 frequencies): ROM 6: - Radio France International (8 frequencies): ROM 7: - Radiotelevisione Italiana (8 frequencies): ROM 8: - Radio Moscow (12 frequencies): ROM 9: - Radio Exterior de Espana (7 frequencies):
