I've tried to match various Break Room features with fairly appropriate MIDI selections. (A few pages don't have music in the background, such as the one listing .wav files and the two pages featuring MIDI files. Seemed kinda silly to have music playing on pages from which you could make other selections....)
It's a fairly eclectic collection. I've amused myself by listing the music used as Break Room background music separately from the rest of my collection.
Now, although I've won some Web awards, I've also learned to deal with constructive criticism regarding the "lack of content" here. It's not ALL links to other sites; honest! I've posted older pictures of my Communications Center and some newer ones, with actual dispatchers at work, and provided maps to get there if you'd like to drop by for a visit. (I might mention that there are officers with guns working there, too, just in case anyone reading this is an Internet stalker or something.....
There's a make-believe Bulletin Board, similar to one you might see in a Comm Center, and I encourage folks to submit memos they'd like to see posted there.
If you have a Home Page you've created, and you aren't sure if it's award-winning material or not, check here to see if it might fit the criteria for an award I offer. There are a couple of other interesting facets to that particular page, anyway. (I couldn't resist pairing "Puttin' On The Ritz" with the list of award recipients!)
On November 24th, 1996, I finally saw the Phantom of the Opera at the Curran Theatre in San Francisco. I'd heard snippets of the music before, and thought: hmmmmm, nice. Folks, do go see the production! I'm wrangling tickets for another performance again; it's that wonderful. I spent my Thanksgiving holiday searching for the CD collection to the original London performance and listening to it once I purchased it and got it home. Then, of course, I had to go looking for Phantom websites on the 'Net.... In appreciation of this musical, I've started my own little Phantom page, featuring the Overture.
Since 1972, I've volunteered my time and skills in Public Safety Communications for local special events, most notably several weekends a year at the Laguna Seca Raceway. I'm one of many Assistant Directors of SCRAMP (Sports Car Racing Association of the Monterey Peninsula). The track Communications Center rivals many small departments' capabilities, in that we use multi-channel radio consoles and headsets and everything but a CAD system. It's very rewarding to be appreciated as a volunteer, and since most of the other directors and assistants are NOT in Public Safety, by the time I've worked an event with them, I am quite ready to go back to work again and deal with folks who have some understanding of radio discipline.
From late 1993 until mid-1997, I was an associate instructor at our Academy in Sacramento. I taught a variety of
communications-related courses to newly-hired dispatchers, during their first few months of employment. I really enjoyed
being able to travel to the Academy about once a month for these classes. It's terribly rewarding to work with folks just
starting out in their careers with Public Safety Communications (and the CHP!). We send ALL our new dispatchers to the same
facility where the officers are trained. (Now that the Department is up to staff on officers, new dispatchers are once again
housed in the Academy dorms.)
Cadet-Officers are housed there for six-and-a-half months. If you know someone who's interested in becoming a CHP officer, you can
get more information from this CHP Officer recruiting site.
And if you wish to find out how to apply for a Communications Operator position with the CHP, you can also check out our recruiting information.
If you do get a chance to visit our Academy, you'll be impressed by the facility, which is located in the midst of a nature preserve. Watch out for the
jack-rabbits! I've been startled by their thundering hordes in the early evening, about dusk, when taking a walk around
the 4-mile perimeter.
Another great reason to stop by our Academy is to check out the CHP Academy PX, where you can purchase CHP memorabilia. Want a CHP tee-shirt, sweatshirt, mug, or other gift? Quality is excellent and prices are very reasonable. The money you spend there goes to support the CHP Recreation Fund. (Most of my own casual-wear advertises my agency affiliation.)
Since September 1995, I've hosted a Dispatch Chat session each and every Monday night on America OnLine, in the Public Safety America Conference Center. We start at 8 p.m. and quit at 10 p.m., Eastern Standard Time. (I'm on the Pacific Coast, so I have to remember to be at the computer Monday nights at 1700 hrs, come rain or shine or overtime!) If you're a member of AOL, please use Keyword: PSA and join us; we would enjoy your participation. I log the chat sessions and send copies out to our "regulars" because you know how our schedules are..... we can't always get away from work. You can also find some of the logs online, too, right here at the Break Room. Since I'm a supervisor, I have a bit more control over my own schedule and I've only missed EIGHT sessions. (Don't worry; I have back-ups to host and log the sessions for y'all!)
Whether you find me online at the Public Safety Center on AOL or on any of the channels in Internet Relay Chat, you'll know it's me by the name: GryEyes911.
I encourage you to save key-strokes and simply call me "Gry" because it's shorter, everybody calls me that, and I'm friendly. :)
If you want to talk shop, that's not a problem with ME; I haven't seen any movies lately.
I've been a member of Wise Women of the Web for some time now, and encourage all gals to check this site out. Don't settle for just being a 'Net "surfer" when you can participate in developing WWW content for everyone to enjoy!
If you're a reader, as am I, you'll appreciate this link to The Break Room BookStore , which is an affiliate of Amazon Books - the Earth's Biggest Bookstore. I used to snag a few paperbacks at the grocery store every week or so, even though my sister tried to get me to use the library. Unfortunately, libraries can't keep up with my insatiable need to read and I would have to wait a few months between visits until they get NEW selections in my areas of interest. There aren't many Recycled Books places where I live, either. Some of my most favorite novels have been read and re-read so much over the years (or I moved and LOST them!) that I have started looking for their replacements via the Internet. I don't think I'll need to look any further than on the Internet from now on!
I adopted this beauty from Lisa Konrad. Clicking on the dragon will take
you to her site, where you, too, can adopt any of a variety of critters.
