Trip to GreeceEaster Friday, April 9God may have rested on the seventh day, but we rested on the sixth! Since it was Easter Friday, which is a major holiday in Greece, and therefore most sites and shops were closed, we wound up hanging around the villa most of the day, doing laundry and relaxing and otherwise being lazy. It was a somewhat overcast, cool day, which didn't exactly encourage us to get up and get moving, either! By mid-afternoon, we'd gathered to strength and enthusiasm to head into Nafplio for another look at the town, a little souvenir shopping (if we could find anything open) and some dinner. |

Now, one thing I have to mention at this point is that Nafplio (which is pretty tough to twist the tongue around) is spelled in the Greek scripts as if it were Nauplio (which I would find a heck of a lot easier to say). I mentioned in the travelogue on Epidauros that modern Greeks say Epidavros. In fact, throughout modern Greek, "au" is pronounced as "af" or "av" and "eu" is "ef" (leading to the very peculiar-sounding Efripides for Euripides). I have to admit, I've never quite got my mind around this and still can't bring myself to say Epidavros or Efripides, even to Greeks!
When we first got to town, things were pretty quiet: most of the shops were closed and there weren't many people around. The kids played on one playground for a while (including one that had the most fantastic, fast, high slide I've ever seen), then we walked down towards the beach. At the end of the beach, there was another playground, so the kids played again there. Eventually, we headed into town to get something to eat. By that time, the shops were open, and we were able to pick up a set of komboloi (worry or prayer beads) for my niece, Cora, to show in her school report on Greece. Julian and Michael went for a little excursion on their own (taking some of the photos shown here) while my mom shopped and I nursed a cranky Vernon by the side of the road. When the boys got back, we had dinner then went back to the villa to call it a night.
