History
The prototype production code-name was "Tempest", while resembling the original Discovery this model is much improved and more reliable. Minor differences are that the body is bigger and the tail-gate cluster is higher. The most notable improvement is the introduction of self-levelling rear airbag suspension. ABS, Air Con and Electric Traction Control (ETC) have become standard, the ETC takes away the need for either manual differential lock or hill descent controls.

2002 Discovery In the models until 2002 the transfer case centre differential lock can be engaged manually with a spanner from under the vehicle. The diff lock was deleted for the models later than 2002.

Unfortunately as owners of early Range Rovers know electronic gizmos do go wrong in time so if/when the ETC goes wrong you will have no way to manually engage the differential, this will need to be considered when buying used models in the later years.

The all-together updated Discovery 3 appeared in 2004.
