Millions of living species vanished from the face of the earth. It is well known the dinosaurs perished then. With them, a major part of all living beings were lost. The biosphere however, has recovered from this global upheaval, which may have been triggered by a meteorite.
Today, our planet suffers from a similar, yet worse catastrophe. Maybe hundreds of species - each of them unique and irreplaceable - vanish every single day. The rate of their perishing today cannot be compared to what happened 65 million years before: it exceeds the mass dying of the dinosaur era many times.
Among the most well-known endangered species of animals are tigers, and whales. But this is actually only the tip of the iceberg.
An imaginary visitor from outer space, watching the life on our earth for eons, would diagnose a dangerous germ to have infected our planet.
What are the causes of this crisis, what is the pathogen,
the cancer cells our planet suffers from?
