Irma Schaffnit. was a physical education teacher from Pennsylvania who taught square dancing. She retired to Green Valley in 1965 when she started both the aqua belles and square dancing. The endeavors were so good that Charles Kuralt of CBS came to interview her for "On the Road." Irma died at age 95 in 1998. Square dancing and round dancing have continued in Green Valley ever since those first weekly dances and classes conducted by Irma. Later the club became an affiliate of Green Valley Recreation, Inc. (GVR). Thus the Green Valley Squares became the official square dance club of Green Valley Recreation. Dave Walker is the square dance caller and has been calling and teaching for 48 years. Frank Felkner is the round dance cuer. They have a special code of eithics they practice. The code states 1.) dancers do not drink before, or during, a dance, 2.) smoking is not allowed in the dance hall. 3.) always be courteous and respect all other dancers. Official colors of the club are "Black and White". They should be worn on the first Monday of the month, and at all special occasions. Membership in the club is restricted to GVR members in good standing. Guests are welcome to all dances providing they live beyond a 20 mile radius of the Green Valley bounderies.
Square Dances, classes, and workshops for all levels are held at the Canoa Hills Social Center unless otherwise
