Music!
from Marie's Wacky World
I had once said, sacreligiously, that music is my saviour.  Certainly, when I mused to my parents over this, they probably would have preferred me to say "Jesus" in place of "Music" but alas, being the agnostic I am, music plays a much larger role in my life.  When I was in high school, I felt as though the only people who understood me where the musicians I listened to.  Haha.  Little did I know at the time that everyone goes through similar experiences.  How we handle our challenges vary, but we really go through a lot of the same crap.  However, it is comforting to know that there are people who understand you and speak to you, even if it is in a lyrical mode set to music.  not to mention, my ability to play alto saxophone helped keep me entertained throughout high school and now in university.  So, here are some of my musings about music.
If there was only one thing a person could use to compare me to my parents, it'd have to be music.  My parents and I have a huge love for music.  What's scary is that sometimes we even listen to the same groups and artists.  Eeek!  My parents have always had music around the house.  When I was a baby (which I still am in some ways), my parents would turn on the classical music station.  As I grew older, we'd listen to Oldies (are they really that old?) and now I listen to whatever I want to.  Hehehehe.  And, as I said before, sometimes my parents will listen with me.
My parents also always encouraged musical ability.  My mom played clarinet when she was in school and my dad struggled in attempts to play the trombone.  So, I do have a musical family, just whether they're good at what they play....the world will never know.  So, when I was in grade one, my parents bought me a keyboard for Christmas.  I had lots of fun with it (and I still have it) even though I didn't quite know how to read music or play notes or anything like that.
In grade three, I tried my luck with vocal performance.  I tended to harmonize more that anything else, so I decided to stick with musical instruments.  In grade five, I tried my hand at the alto saxophone.  I loved it, I just wasn't that good because I couldn't read music very well.  Plus, I was highly uncoordinated.  But, alas, I did stick with it.  I've now been playing alto saxophone for nine years and I've even experimented with some other instruments, like flute, trumpet and clarinet.  I think clarinet might become my next forte, but yeah, I still prefer the saxophone overall.  Now, why do I keep wanting to say, "This one time, at band camp...."?
My Music Background
Bands I Like
So, yeah, if you were paying attention to the facts page, then you'd know that the music genre I typically listen to is rock.  Well, truthfully, if it's upbeat, catchy, has meaning or is just plain fun, I'll probably listen to it.  Yes, I have been known to listen to a rap artist, sing along to a country song or two or dance enthusiastically to a teen pop piece, but my heart still lies with rock.  Mmmmm....raspberry filled donut.  However, my favourite band is a folk band.  How strange can this world get?  So, yeah, I'm going to give you a run down of bands I like.  I know, some of you are going to think that some of the bands I listen to are....I'm not quite sure of the word, STUPID, but then again, I'm sure you all have your guilty pleasures too.  However, I am open to any recommendations.  I like getting to know new and old bands that I haven't given a chance to before.  So, if you notice we have a lot in common with the bands we like, feel free to make a recommendation.  It's so much better than listening to the radio with all those mind-numbing commercials.  I hate commercials.  Oh, yah, and the lists are not in any particular order.  Just random.
Bands that have more than two songs on my computer's playlist, or would have if I had more music from them:
The Arrogant Worms (my fav), Our Lady Peace (I don't care what Ed the Sock says about Raine), Barenaked Ladies (Hmm...not naked, not ladies), Nickelback (yet another Canadian band), Korn (so what if the Death Clock will say I die sooner?), Ben Folds Five (piano players are cool), Nirvana (I used to not like Nirvana, how high school changes you), Nine Inch Nails (you'd never guess), Drain STH (funny, I just randomly bought their album.  Loved it!), Cibo Matto (who couldn't like two quirky Japanese women?), Full on the Mouth (first heard them on a video game), Papa Roach (so deep), Marilyn Manson (my dad likes it, too), David Usher (ever heard of Moist? He was in that band), Alanis Morrissette (yes, angst-Canuck girl), Rob Zombie (very interesting demon), Eve6 (quite good, so young), Live (my parents HATE them), Blues Traveler (who couldn't love energetic harmonica solos?), Superdrag (don't ask), Poe (some say she's creepy, I don't think she is), Rammstein (how else would have I learned German?), Rage Against the Machine (political messages, gotta love it), Disturbed (love the music), Smashing Pumpkins (my first non-comedy album was "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness"), 311 (hmm...weird group), Stone Temple Pilots (c'mon, STP.  Hello), Crash Test Dummies (where else would you find a bass lead singer?), fulflej (betcha don't even know who they are), blender 21 (wonderful cover of "Whenever, Wherever"), Tantric (hmm... don't practice it), Jimmy Eat World (Too bad they had to change the name of their latest album), Puddle of Mudd (I never thought I'd like 'em), Red Hot Chili Peppers (again, hello), Godsmack (What about wiccans don't you like?), Adam Ant (a recommendation from a friend....quite quirky), Silverchair (yah), the Beatles (C'mon, if you listen to rock, you listen to the Beatles), the Monkees (they're fun), Santana (good stuff), Cher (she's the woman!), Slipknot (quite disturbing, quite my taste), Weezer (fun, fun), the Cranberries (great stuff from the '90's), Sum 41 (yet another Canadian band), Guano Apes (Germany's definition of I don't know what) Linkin Park (again, I'm entitled to like whatever), Veruca Salt (well, before Nina Gordon left), Jimmie's Chicken Shack (actually quite good), Wave (I think they're Canada's answer to Savage Garden), Alien Ant Farm (fun metal-ish band.  Why don't they seem like metal?), hoobastank (they have some good songs), the Lemonheads (haha, interesting band)Stella Soleil (oh, she's a dirty girl), Republica (dance party!), Eiffel 65 (more dancing!), Swollen Members (hmm... Canadian rap.  What a concept!) Trapt (they're just that cool), Evanesence (I don't understand why people have sucha  problem with some things), t.A.T.u. (did I say I like quirky?), Disturbed (mmm.. metal), Bad Religion (I'm a 21st Century digital boy.. wait, girl...) Lords of Acid (hehe.. sex, drugs and heresy... who could ask for more?), INKUBUS SUKKUBUS (awesome goth/pagan band!), Bif Naked (she's so odd, but very cool!), Freezepop (Thank you Ryan for the aural cocaine!), 3 Doors Down (especially since they put Tony Stewart in a video!), The Postal Service (yet another Ryan recommendation), Stabbing Westward ("Shame" all time favourite song)... and I'm sure there are more to come.

Got any recommendations?
