God's Law

Rumor has it that the decalogue became invalid when Christ died on the cross, but as with most rumors, it doesn't hold much water.

This idea comes from not understanding which "law" was truly abolished and the only way to find out which one it was, we go to scripture.

Most controversy over the "law" of God being valid is based around the Sabbath so lets look at some key points about it.

The Sabbath was set at the foundation of the world:

Genesis 2:3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

The Sabbath is a sign between God and his true Israel:

Ezek:20:12 Moreover also I gave them my sabbaths, to be a sign between me and them, that they might know that I am the LORD that sanctify them.

Ezek:20:20 And hallow my sabbaths; and they shall be a sign between me and you, that ye may know that I am the LORD your God.

Honoring the sabbath is included in the decalogue:

Exodus 20:8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9: Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: 10: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: 11: For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

THE MORAL LAW

The "moral law" is referred to as the Royal Law:

James 2:8 If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well: 9 But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors. 10: For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.

Was spoken by God:

Deuteronomy 4:12 And the LORD spake unto you out of the midst of the fire: ye heard the voice of the words, but saw no similitude; only ye heard a voice. 13: And he declared unto you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, even ten commandments; and he wrote them upon two tables of stone.

Was written by God on tables of stone:

Exodus 24:12 And the LORD said unto Moses, Come up to me into the mount, and be there: and I will give thee tables of stone, and a law, and commandments which I have written; that thou mayest teach them.

Was written "with the finger of God" on stone:

Exodus 31:18 And he gave unto Moses, when he had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sinai, two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God.

Was placed in the ark:

Exodus 40:20 And he took and put the testimony into the ark, and set the staves on the ark, and put the mercy seat above upon the ark:

1 Kings 8:9 There was nothing in the ark save the two tables of stone, which Moses put there at Horeb, when the LORD made a covenant with the children of Israel, when they came out of the land of Egypt.

Hebrews 9:4 Which had the golden censer, and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold, wherein was the golden pot that had manna, and Aaron's rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant;

Is "Perfect":

Psalm 19:7 The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.

Is to "stand fast for ever and ever":

Psalm 111:7 The works of his hands are verity and judgment; all his commandments are sure. 8: They stand fast for ever and ever, and are done in truth and uprightness.

WAS NOT DESTROYED BY CHRIST:

Matthew 5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

Was to be magnified by Christ:

Isaiah 42:21 The LORD is well pleased for his righteousness' sake; he will magnify the law, and make it honourable.

Gives knowledge of sin:

Romans 3:20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

Romans 7:7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.

THE CEREMONIAL LAW

Lets just take a minute to reflect upon what the sanctuary service was for.

The sacrifice of the blemish free lamb symbolized the sacrifice of the paschal lamb (Christ) to free us from our sins.

Just ask yourself this question... what use was the sanctuary service once the great sacrifice was made? Once Christ died there was no longer a need to sacrifice the lamb because what it was leading up to had taken place.

Is called "the law... contained in ordinances":

Ephesians 2:15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;

Was spoken by Moses:

Leviticus 1:1 And the LORD called unto Moses, and spake unto him out of the tabernacle of the congregation, saying, 2: Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, If any man of you bring an offering unto the LORD, ye shall bring your offering of the cattle, even of the herd, and of the flock. 3: If his offering be a burnt sacrifice of the herd, let him offer a male without blemish: he shall offer it of his own voluntary will at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation before the LORD. 4: And he shall put his hand upon the head of the burnt offering; and it shall be accepted for him to make atonement for him.

Was "the handwriting of ordinances":

Colossians 2:14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

WAS ABOLISHED BY CHRIST:

Ephesians 2:15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;

WAS TAKEN OUT OF THE WAY by Christ:

Colossians 2:14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

Was instituted in consequence of sin:

Leviticus 3-7

After seeing that Christ abolished the "Ceremonial Law" and not the "Moral Law" because he "fulfilled it" by becoming the greatest sacrifice we can be sure that the decalogue and other "moral laws" which were given to us still stand to this day.
