Chapter 1: Dreams

Duo seated himself at the overcrowded bar with Wufei close behind. The loud techno music pulsated through the ground and the dancing and jumping people filled the room. The light displays and strobe lights were the only source of illumination, even by the bar. Duo ordered a drink and flashed a fake ID. Wufei asked for merely water.

"Maxwell," Wufei began, but Duo shook his head.

"Please, just let me have some fun first, or at least get drunk," Duo joked, but Wufei retained his sober attitude. "You don't get out much, do you Wu?" Duo asked, gladly grabbing the amber drink that was placed before him.

"I never found the need," Wufei answered, eying the man that was sitting next to him. He was a larger, burly man and Wufei did not appreciate the man studying his body like that. He quickly left, only to be replaced by another person. Wufei clenched his teeth in frustration, but forced himself to remain calm. He was not here for pleasure, he was here for Duo.

"I love this song," Duo smiled and took another shot of the mystery alcoholic substance.

"I never heard it," Wufei took his water and told himself to be patient. Duo would talk to him when he was ready.

"I love the bass here, you can really feel the beat. It helps to dance to it," Duo winked at a female admirer, who he caught starring at him. She giggled and ran over to her friends. Duo laughed and turned back to his drink.

Wufei didn't really have anything to say. This wasn't his ideal environment, and he was beginning to feel uncomfortable. He didn't let any of his thoughts show through though, only taking another sip of the cool, refreshing water. Soon, the silence was too heavy to bear, and Wufei knew that he had to begin some conversation to get Duo talking again.

"I don't like the feel of this," Wufei lowered his voice.

"What?" asked Duo. He hadn't truly been paying attention and had lost himself in the beat of the music.

"All five of us together, I don't like the idea. Its something big, very big," Wufei knew that Duo would want to talk about something else, but Wufei found that he had very little positive things in common with Duo, and had not spent a lot of time getting to know him. Of course he knew basic things, such as fighting technique, but he had not spent a lot of time with the fellow pilot, and was not fortunate enough to know his hobbies or interests, outside of battling OZ.

Duo sighed. He was hoping that it wouldn't come to this. He knew why he was there, sitting at the bar. He knew why he was drowning shot after shot, and he knew why Wufei was with him. He couldn't help but be angry at Wufei though. If it were Heero or Trowa in the same situation, Wufei wouldn't have acted the same way, and he certainly wouldn't have come to a club just to try to get them to talk. He would have let Trowa and Heero handle it on their own, so why did he have to care about Duo? Why couldn't Wufei just leave him alone and let him drink himself into oblivion? Or at least into someone's bed. It was so much easier that way. Why did Wufei have to come and make sure that he didn't do something stupid? Duo liked doing stupid things, they made life more interesting. Not that his life as a teenage terrorist wasn't interesting enough.

"Yeah," Duo shrugged his shoulders, "I just can't wait to kick some OZ ass."

Wufei smiled slyly. It was more true than anything else. No matter the differences between the five of them, they all had one goal: to destroy OZ. It was often what kept them going through the day.

"Blood-thirsty?" Wufei asked taking another sip of his water.

"Hell yeah," Duo took his fourth shot, "Shinigami's thirst is never quenched."

Wufei sighed, "So God of Death, how's life(1)?" Wufei asked instinctively searching the crowd for anyone remotely suspicious. He knew that the area was fairly OZ soldier free, but he still had to be watchful.

"You know how its been," Duo closed his eyes, he didn't want to do this, "You live it too."

"But I don't wake up screaming every night," Wufei stared intensely at Duo, who refused to meet his eyes.

"I've got it under control, its cool. I got some pills, they'll make me sleep better. Its just the stress," Duo tried to act as if it wasn't a big deal.

"The stress isn't going to go away," Wufei commented, watching every aspect of Duo. His heart rate had accelerated, he was flushing because of the alcohol, and he was breathing faster.

"The drugs'll help," Duo shook his head.

"Will they?" Wufei persisted.

"Could we just drop it? I'll be fine," Duo raised his voice and harshened his tone. Wufei knew that he had to back off. Duo wasn't ready to admit there was a problem. Maybe denial would be a better way for Duo, he could deal with his problems after the war. Now, he needed to have a clear head and he couldn't be worrying about the nightmares. Wufei took a cleansing breath and thought about it carefully. He wasn't sure how worried he needed to be.

Before Wufei could find an answer, a tall woman approached Duo gracefully. She had thin, platinum blonde hair that fell to her shoulders. She was paler, with ice green eyes. She had sparkly blue eye shadow and her lips were the same colour. She was clothed in a short white dress, and had white shoes to match.

"I like your hair," She picked up Duo's braid and ran the end of it between her fingers, "Its beautiful." Duo cocked an eyebrow and leaned back to examine the beauty while Wufei rolled his eyes. "God," She gasped softly, "You have such gorgeous eyes," her voice was high, soft, and intelligent, there was no trace of any ditsy or slutty undertones, that most girls at the club possessed. But even if her voice didn't betray her thoughts, her body language screamed 'lust'.

"My name's Duo," Duo smiled, she was radiant and only feeding his ever growing ego.

"Isis," she took Duo's hand and pulled him onto the dance floor. Wufei groaned as he watched the two dance erotically. It was almost disgusting the way the two behaved given the fact that they had known each other for less than thirty seconds. Wufei went back to his water. By the end of the night, he would be the one needing the alcohol.

After three songs, Wufei couldn't take the atmosphere or the people anymore. They were all sex-crazed lunatics as far as he was concerned, and he feared that if he stayed, he might somehow contract the state of mind and become like them. After paying the bill, Wufei pushed his way through the overpopulated dance floor, trying to find his comrade.

Once he located the braided drunk and his leech-like companion, Wufei curtly informed them that he was leaving.

"So soon?" Duo teased.

"Yes, I'm taking the car," Wufei turned to leave when Duo stopped him.

"Why don't you take the bike, okay?" Duo handed Wufei the keys.

"Wh-" Wufei stopped and understood. Duo wanted to spend more 'quality time' with his new found friend, who happened to be sucking on his neck, and finding any excuse to touch him. Wufei narrowed his eyes and handed over the keys to the car. He didn't want to discuss the issue any further.

Duo laughed, "Thanks, hey, and don't wait up!"

"I wasn't planning to," Wufei mumbled as he began to make his way through the swarms of people.

"Maybe we should leave too," Isis suggested after she had detached herself from Duo's neck.

"Why?" Duo asked, but Isis only grinned back deviously. A smile crept onto Duo's face, "I think we should leave too."

"Just let me get my purse," Isis soon disappeared back into the ocean of youth only to reappear moments later with a white purse.

Just as Wufei was putting his helmet on, he saw Isis and Duo stumbling out of the club, laughing. "You didn't!" Isis giggled uncontrollably, "that's horrible!"

"Baka," Wufei spoke under his breath and drove out of the parking lot. Wufei couldn't wait to get home. All he wanted to do was get away from that girl. He didn't know why he didn't like her. Maybe it was the fact that she flirted hopelessly, or that she couldn't control her hormones, or that she was promiscuous, then again, it could also have been that she hadn't even looked at Wufei in the least. If she acted so 'easy' and slutty, then how come she had not showed any attraction to Wufei?

Wufei cleared his mind and told himself to focus on getting to the motel. He just needed to do something so he wouldn't think so much. It never did any good. Fifteen minutes later, Wufei pulled into the desolate parking lot. They had been lucky to find a motel far enough away from the city that they could easily reach their Gundams only three kilometers away. Unfortunately, it was a rat-infested hell hole.
