Length:                   Salisbury Point Ghost Trail; 1.6 miles

Difficulty:               Easy. Flat, gravel and cinder rail trail. Mt bike recommended.

Directions:

To start from Lions Park ; From I-495 take exit 55 to Route 110 east. From I-95 take exit 58 to Route 110 east. Just before Routes 1 & 1A, take a left on Gardner St, then another left on Lions Way to Lions Park.

The Salisbury Point Ghost Trail is named for the "Ghost" trains that transported early automobile bodies (covered with white canvas shrouds) from Fisher Body in Amesbury through Salisbury to Detroit along the old Boston & Maine rail bed. This section is the Salisbury Branch of the Eastern Railroad which connected Salisbury Point-Salisbury Mills and Amesbury to the main line. The trail is part of a 30 mile system of trails planned to extend to the coast, through Salisbury, and on to Newburyport and Newbury. The Coastal Trails Coalition is working to bring that system to reality. See; COASTAL TRAILS COALITION . Future plans call for continuing the trail west and connecting into the existing Amesbury Riverwalk. See; Amesbury Riverwalk . For more information visit; SALISBURY POINT GHOST TRAIL .

Starting from Lions Park ; There is a map board at the start of the trail, just before you cross over a bridge constructed of old railroad ties. You then cross a boardwalk constructed of old railroad ties. The gravel trail heads into the woods with homemade benches scattered along the trail. A sharp curve brings you to the old rail bed and a couple of picnic tables. You cross Cushing Street after a 1/2 mile.

Note; An on-road detour will bring you to the Old Eastern Marsh Trail. Just head left along Cushing St to Route 110 and cross over to Mudnock Rd. (Use Caution as there is no cross-walk over this busy road). Follow Mudnock Rd to the Old Eastern Marsh Trail on your right after 0.8 miles. See; Old Eastern Marsh Trail .

Continuing along the trail you next come to Bartlett St. A small parking area is located here, as well as, a map board. There are some informational signs located here as well. The next section is ramrod straight as it travels alongside a transmission line under a dark canopy of trees. After traveling along a small berm the trail surface changes to cinder at 1.1 miles. You pass by an orange pole at 1.5 miles where the trail narrows and ends after 1.6 miles. Future plans call for extending the trail south to Amesbury.
