LONG
TERM PATTERNS IN THE BRAIN
The mind is split into two parts - the conscious mind which deals with logical
matters and minute by minute processing of information in our conscious lives.
The unconscious deals with the bigger picture. It deals with larger strategies
and helps us to decide what exactly it is we desire in life.
The conscious mind is very good at devising new ways of thinking. Most of
the time this is not important as things do not change from day to day. The
conscious mind is good at following instructions. It is a great list maker.
Take for instance something simple as crossing the road. The conscious knows
the instructions to follow. It must stop, look and listen. Then after looking
both ways it is safe to cross.
The unconscious works in a different way. One day it may suddenly come to
the decision that crossing the road is still dangerous even if you follow
those simple rules. It may have realized that the traffic is just going too
fast. It will notice that those rules for safety have actually become inappropriate
because ow new rules apply. Perhaps speed limits are not being observed as
much.
There maybe a cue for the mind to change its opinion such as an accident.
But accidents happen all the time anyway. So the mind needs to know when a
greater number of accidents are happening than really should. In such cases
it will realize that special new safety measures need to be taken there.
The unconscious mind therefore is good at spotting changes in patterns. It
maybe building up a picture. Firstly it may flag a few warnings. It may signal
that some old pattern of thinking is maybe becoming outmoded.
So what types of new patterns will be seen by the unconscious? The brain may
spot changes in age and that such changes have implications for how we behave.
If a person is getting older and their health is failing then maybe their
unconscious will try to inform them that driving is dangerous. Younger people
may have signals from the unconscious that they are now ready for new activities.
They may signal to the person that they are now ready for sexual and emotional
relationships.
Such dreams have long term themes. They are signals of emotional changes within
us. These changes are almost imperceptible - certainly to the conscious mind.
If people do not heed these warnings to long term changes in patterns they
will maybe even suffer nightmares. The more we ignore the changes the more
shocking the dream. This is the unconscious minds way of informing us of long
term changes in our life.
