PDOC1999: Abstract

Royal Bengal Tiger of Bangladesh

Bangladesh, being one of the least developed country in this region with 120 million people of which more than 00% are rural based, progressing with high ambition and highest budget allocation in education sector taking realistic leap towards the dream of 100% educated population by 2006. Established by an Act in 1992 and approved by the highest authority of Bangladesh Government, the Bangladesh Open University (BOU) is working with total dedication to spread out education for this general mass residing at the remotest region of Bangladesh using advanced IT techniques and methods. Necessary factors are thoughtfully considered; like, the Socio-economic status of the country with respect to the contemporary world, generalized use of this modern media of technology (radio, tv, computer, Internet). BOU has chalked out diversified activities including formal and non-formal programs with current student number reaching nearly at 140,000 and expectation of more than 500,000 wit)-)in next five years. infrastructure has been setup to accommodate these high number of students and at present BOU is working with strong responsibility taking support from two dedicated servers; one with Linux, offering e-mail service to more than two hundred users residing at campus and twelve remote regional resource centres through dial-up techniques. A fiber optics based Wide Area Network (WAN) has already partially been established and this network will be able to make connection to all regional resource centres, 80 local centres and all universities of Bangladesh through a high speed radio-link. This information infrastructure involves a proper bench mark, adequately guided strategy and extensive use of a digital library using necessary LAN/WAN communication network and interactive multimedia methods to promote the computer supported collaborative learning system to reach those remote based population beyond conventional learning processes. Implementation of this virtual learning system needs to accommodate our moral, ethical, legal, social, economical and institutional supports.
