Paper Machie Pumpkin

Pumpkin

I have had an idea for a giant pumpkin monster for a while. My original idea was to take a few real pumpkins and putting them on PVC frames. I realized that wouldn't work, but I've often thought of those ideas. I eventually forgot about the idea, that is until 2004 when I saw some really cool pumpkin headed scarecrows in the Field of Screams at Halloween Horror Nights at Universal. These got me into the idea of building some pumpkin props again, but it was too late in the season for me to build some sort of pumpkin props. When I started building props in 2005, I came across pumpkinrot.com. They have some really cool pumpkin scarecrows that were my inspiration.

Paper towel I made my pumpkin entirely out of paper machie. I started by making a base for the paper machie to go around. I took all sorts of stuff for the base and just rolled it into a sort of pumpkin shape. I had newspaper, junk mail, plastic bags, aluminum foil, and all sorts of other stuff wrapped up in the ball.
aluminum foil I covered the ball with aluminum foil so the actual paper machie wouldn't stick to the paper towels and the other paper that was in the base. I then taped the foil into place...
open I didn't take any pictures of putting the paper machie over the mold, but once I thought it was thick enough and dry enough, I cut the paper machie open with a saw. I lost the outer layers of paper mache where I cut from the paper shredding, but other than that it held up well.
tape I then taped the cut edges together just to hold all of the somewhat seperated layers together on the outside and the inside
closed I then closed up the two halfs of the pumpkin shell and taped it the two halfs together. I used packing tape for this step.
Final layer I then put a few final layers of paper machie on top of the taped halfs of the pumpkin. I used all Halloween appropriate adds on the outer layer. Like in this picture you get the Storyteller from Halloween Horror Nights 15.
bush gardens ...and heres an evil clown from Busch Gardens Howl-O-Scream.
stem I then made a pumpkin stem out of twisted newspaper and taped it together. I then taped it to the appropriate place on the pumpkin.
drawing Then I drew where I wanted the face to be on the pumpkin...
open I cut out the eyes and taped together the edges. The mouth was later cut out too. It was supported open with toothpicks.
tissues I then covered the pumpkin with paper machie using layers of napkins as the paper for the final outer layer.
painted I painted the outer layer orange, and I was done with the pumpkin.

This particular pumpkin went on a scarecrow. Go to the Scarecrow Page.
