Community Outreach - Deeds, Not Creeds
Our Outreach programs deal primarily with social concerns that affect our local, national, and global community.
The act of Community Outreach can be found in many
UUA
Principles & Purposes. Our church is dedicated to following these
principals by extending our deeds into the surrounding communities in order
to promote "The inherent worth and dignity of every person".
To see what current and past Community Outreach issues HUC has addressed recently please feel free to search our public
newsletter

Upgrade Tangipahoa
HUC supports adult literacy through partnership with Upgrade Tangipahoa to
tutor individual adult students. This is a very rewarding program!
HUC members & friends are encouraged to help with this community action
program. Through the program adults who want to learn to read are paired
one-on-one with volunteer tutors. Tutors and their students meet once
a week for an hour. Upgrade Tangipahoa receives and screens requests
for tutoring, pairs tutors and students, provides high-quality training materials
and gives us instruction on how to teach literacy. A room is available at
the Hammond Public Library to conduct the tutoring, although sessions can
be held anywhere, and are scheduled at your convenience.
Shirley Wells is our contact person for this program and runs the training
sessions for prospective tutors. If you are interested please contact
HUC Literacy Project Manager Phil Stouffer.
The Nature Conservancy of Louisiana
Environmental issues are at the forefront of many UU members. The Nature
Conservancy (TNC) is a worldwide organization. We have had leaders
from this organization visit us for speaking engagements. Members &
friends of HUC often participate in TNC sponsored local events.
