One night, I was driving from the city out to my cabin
when I was
stopped by a County Sheriff's Car. As the uniformed
officer walked
over to my car, I rolled down the window, and asked,
"What's the
trouble, Officer". He replied, "Get outta the
car" in a very menacing
voice. No sooner was I out of my car when he
ordered me to spread
my arms and legs and lean up against the car.
I was frisked and then
my hands were roughly pulled back and handcuffed behind
my back.
After a long ride, I was yanked out of the car and
dragged into a
building. When we got inside, the blindfold
was removed, and I saw
that I was in some sort of small jailhouse.
The gag remained, so there
was no way I could even ask what all this was about.
The officer who
brought me there said something I couldn't hear to
the guard, who
came over and began to drag me further into the building.
I started to
squirm and kick as best I could, but all that accomplished
is that my
ankles were quickly locked in heavy legirons, with
a short 6-inch chain
connecting them, which certainly limited my ability
to kick.
I was tossed into a small barred cell, and the door
slammed shut with
a loud clang. The lock clicked shut with a resounding
finality. My cell
was empty save for a narrow cot with a thin mattress,
and a pail for my
eliminations. About an hour later, a guard re-entered
my cell,
changed my handcuffs from back to front, and, warning
me to keep
silent, removed my gag.
Next morning, the guard entered my cell, bearing a
tray of breakfast.
Clanging the cell door locked behind him, he left
me alone, still
handcuffed and leg ironed. I began to eat the
bowl of thin, hot cereal
that I had been left. It tasted pretty awful,
but I was very hungry.
Next I was told that prison rules forbade prisoners
from lying or sitting
on the beds except during rest or sleep periods, so
I must stand in my
cell. I was warned of punishment if I disobeyed.
I began to ask for
someone to tell me why I was here, but was quickly
warned that if I
persisted, or made any other noise, the gag would
go right back in my
mouth.
Several interminable hours passed, with absolutely
nothing to do but
pace back and forth in my small cell. My legs
were growing very tired
even though I spend some time leaning against the
bars or the walls.
Finally, noticing that no one was around or watching,
I decided to risk
sitting on my bunk for a while. No sooner had
I sat down when my
guard rushed into the area (there must have been a
hidden camera in
my cell), saying "I told you it was against
the rules to sit down. Now
you'll have to bear the consequences." I found
myself standing
spread-eagle against the bars of my cell, with my
arms and my legs
tied very widely spread against the bars. I
was left in this very
uncomfortable position for the rest of the morning.
Around noontime, I was let down from the bars of my
cell, but a hood
was immediately placed over my head, which blocked
all light and
most sound, and covered my mouth as well. Then
I was placed in a
canvas straitjacket, and strapped up tightly.
My legs were placed in a
very tight canvas sack that was laced up and attached
to the jacket. I
was encased from head to toe, unable to move a muscle.
I was picked
up and carried out of my cell, into another room,
where I was dumped
onto a padded floor. As they were leaving, I
faintly heard the guard
say, "We got orders to give you the full treatment!".
I was left that way
for several hours. Then my guard came in and
removed my hood, but
left the rest of the outfit in place. I was
fed a glass of water and a few
crusts of bread. "You're on a bread and water
diet from now on.".
I was once again left alone, in what it could now
see was a small padded
cell.
Several hours later, I was finally released from my
straitjacket, and
brought back to my cell. This time, a heavy
metal collar was placed
around my neck, with a chain connecting two matching
manacles for
my wrists. My ankles were placed in a set of
iron shackles connected
by a rigid metal bar. I was told that I was
being left for the night, and
that I was allowed to use my bunk. I fell off
to sleep almost
immediately, despite the heavy chains.
Next morning, I was once again given my ration of bread
and water.
No sooner had I finished my meager breakfast then
the hood was
once again placed on my head. I was pulled out
of my cell and forced
into what felt like a very small enclosure.
I was secured by wrists,
ankles and chest, and heard a door slam. I was
completely
immobilized in a very confining space, as well as
not being able to see
or hear anything. After an hour or so, I really
wasn't sure how much
more of this I could stand without going crazy.
Finally, after what must have been a few more hours
(it was impossible to
keep any real sense of time) the enclosure was opened,
and I was
released, and my hood removed.
I was in a very sorry state by then. The guard
half-carried me
downstairs to a small dank stone basement cell.
He chained me to the
wall by neck, wrists and ankles, so that I could neither
sit nor lie down,
and slammed and bolted the heavy metal door, thus
blocking out all
light. I dozed off, slumping in my chains against
the dungeon wall.
Several hours later, a guard entered my cell to give
me my dinner. Since I was chained to the wall, the guard had to feed
me my bread and water.
I dozed and woke many times, throughout the night.
Of course, I had
absolutely no idea of time, and just assumed it was
morning when
once again, my guard entered to feed me my bread and
water.
