I ran out and bought this CD the day it was released, and I’ve listened to it at least once a day ever since! It has quickly become one of my favourite shows of all time. My friend Stacy complains that the show has too many characters and you can’t really get involved with any of them, but I feel just the opposite. The wider base of characters gives me an even greater idea of how great the tragedy really was, and it makes me feel for each and every one of them.
Random Thoughts on the CD ...
Special mention right at the beginning has to go to Brian d’Arcy James, who plays Barrett, a stoker. He has a gorgeous voice, and I totally fell in love with him when he appeared on Rosie to sing my favourite song in the show, “The Proposal/The Night Was Alive” (along with Martin Moran as Bride, the wireless operator, who is also wonderful - hear them sing a clip from the song here and see them here in a photo I found on the Rosie O'Donnell Show website). My other favourite songs include the opening sequence, which is 20 minutes long on the CD and sends shivers down my spine every time I listen to it, and “We’ll Meet Tomorrow,” which is sung as the lifeboats are lowered, and brings tears to my eyes repeatedly. There isn’t a single cast member who doesn’t shine on this recording - besides James and Moran, I especially love Michael Cerveris, Jennifer Piech, David Elder, William Youmans, and Victoria Clark. The songs, with music and lyrics by Maury Yeston, all (if you’ll pardon the pun) hit the right note. :-) Happy when they should be, heartbreaking when they have to be. Even the joyous songs at the beginning are poignant because the audience knows exactly what is going to happen to the ship and 2/3 of the people aboard her.
Two lines which break my heart every time I hear them ...
“Come say you love me, as I kiss your eyes
Let one brief moment make eternal ties”
“Go along with mother to the lifeboat,
Don’t even say it, I’ll be fine.
I’ll collect you both tomorrow morning,
You and this beloved son of mine.”
