Kelly:
Dana Scully smoothed the dark green fabric of the dress over her hips and turned to inspect her reflection in the mirror. Webb had called less than half an hour ago, and asked her to have Dinner with him. While she had been surprised at the sudden invite, she had quickly found out that he had an agenda. His first question to her after finding out she wasn't busy tonight was:
"Do you know where Mulder went?".
It took her 3 seconds to figure out that Mulder had taken Casey out for dinner tonight, and if she knew her partner ( and she did) they'd end up at the only place Mulder ever took anyone...."The Empire Room" in downtown Washington.
She had passed on that information to Webb and he had nearly crowed With delight, he told her he'd pick her up in half an hour and they'd be going to dinner and then dancing. She had laughed and asked him what he was up to, but he simply told her he'd see her later.
All she had to do now was wait....
After hanging up from Dana, Clay picked up his cell phone and dialed the ER.
"Hi this Agent Webb...yes that's right...from the CIA. Listen, I hate to bother you but Charlie Cameron left his cell phone in my car this afternoon and I'd like to give it back to him, I'd hate for him to miss an emergency call."
The nurse on the other end informed him of Charlie's date. "You don't have the name of the restaurant, I can have it couriered over there to him?"
After a few seconds deliberation the nurse gave up the name of the venue.
"The Empire Room in DC...Thankyou, you've been a tremendous help!"
Clay said trying to keep the excitement from his voice.
He slapped the cell phone shut, he was in luck, it appeared that both Charlie and Mulder were taking his partner's to the same place tonight. That was definately going to make his work a lot easier....now all he had to do was convince Dana to really turn on the charm at dinner.
Dana sat on the sofa waiting for the inevitable knock on the door, heralding Webb's arrival.
When it came, she opened the door and let him in, dressed in a blazer and a white shirt over his trousers, he looked very different to the stuffy 3 piece suited Clayton Webb she knew.
He looked...relaxed, and it unnerved her a little.
"You look fabulous. That color looks great on you!" He said as he looked her up and down appreciatively.
"Thankyou, you look great too." She said with a smile. "So Webb, what are we up to tonight?"
Webb grinned at her, and she noted that that smile, when it was focussed soley on you, could be quite devastating.
"We're going to give your partner and my partners something to think about!" he said.
"Something along the lines of say....us being involved???" She hedged.
"Something exactly like that!"
Scully grinned at him.
"Mulder's not gonna know what hit him!"
"Hmmm...I can't wait to see the look on Casey's & Traci's face when we walk in together!"
Scully laughed out loud.
"Hmmm and Casey and Traci thought THEY were evil!"
Traci:
Kelly Chegwidden and her fiancee, Kevin Tiner, quietly sat in a darkened corner of the Empire Room, acutely aware that Casey McDaniels and Traci MacKenzie were there with there respective dates.
"I can't believe Casey isn't killing someone yet," Kelly whispered.
"What? Why?" She smiled at Tiner.
"Kevin, sometimes you can be so cute. Traci is here with Webb... the same Webb that she and Casey have been fighting over."
"Oh." He looked into her eyes. "I really don't care who is here with who as long as you are here with me." Kelly quickly forgot about her friends.
"Mulder, Scully's going to kill you you know," Traci laughed.
"Why? It's not like she and I are dating."
Casey rolled her eyes.
"Oh, please, the moment another woman even thinks of looking at you, Scully is right there by your side." "Yeah, and you don't exactly keep your distance if another man is interested in her," Traci finished.
"So, Charlie, how did you get dragged into all this mess?" Mulder asked, trying to change the subject.
"Hmmm... back at the hospital, trying to restrain a certain Agent MacKenzie." He grinned at Traci. "Probably the most fun I've had in the ER in a long time." She blushed and excused herself only to freeze upon standing up.
"Traci?"
Casey followed her friend's gaze and stopped.
There in the doorway was one very handsome Clayton Webb with an equally dressed-to-kill Agent Dana Scully on his arm, laughing and smiling at each other. Mulder and Cameron turned to see what they were looking at. Immediately the three of them had to to hold Mulder down.
"I'll kill him!" Mulder growled.
Meanwhile Tiner looked up from his dinner and gasped. "Uh-oh..."
"What?" Kelly asked turning around " Oh This is going to be a night to remember"
Kelly:
Clay grinned at Dana as they walked across the restuarant blantantly ignoring the fact that Casey asnd Traci were there. The waiter showed them to their table and Clay held out Dana's chair for her and leaned down to whisper in her ear as he did.
"Hmmm...looks like your partner isn't happy about your choice of escort this evening."
Dana laughed, as Clay walked around the table and seated himself.
"Too bad, if he can't get up the nerve to ask me out on a date then he can't be peeved when someone else does!"
"So are you in love with him?" Clay asked with raised eyebrows.
"Hmm your powers of deduction never cease to amaze me Webb!" She said with a grin.
Their drinks waiter arrived and Clay ordered an exorbinantly expensive bottle of champagne for them.
"You trying to get me drunk?" Dana asked with a smile.
"Why Dana, I'm insulted that you would suggest such a thing!" He said smiling back at her.
"So tell me about your dilemma." Dana said sitting back in her chair and studying the man that sat across from her. He looked tired and stressed, but even so, he was still as sexy as hell.
Clay took a deep breath and began to explain the whole mess. Ten minutes later he concluded...
"...and so now they've teamed up and I'm left partner-less. The thing I don't get is why Casey went after Mulder...I mean they have nothing in common."
Dana gave Clay a smile.
"Except their warped sense of humor." She grinned "Did you even think that maybe she was trying to make you jealous?"
"She's doing a great job" He muttered.
"What about Traci?"
"Traci...she's decided that she's in love with the good doctor over there.I don't know what she sees in Cameron, the guys a stuffed shirt!"
The thought of Clayton Webb calling anyone else a stuffed shirt sent Dana Scully into gales of laughter, and although he didn't quite understand what he had said to set it off, he too laughed.
Traci:
Across the room, 4 people watched with increasing interest. Mulder pushed back his chair and stood up, throwing down his napkin. "That's it...Webb is gonna die!" Casey grabbed Mulder's arm. "Wait!"
Kelly and Tiner, meanwhile, picked at their dinner - they were not going to leave before this was all over.
"Think there's going to be blood shed?" Tiner asked.
"I don't know, but I hope not. That would mean we'd be tied up in court as witnesses," Kelly sighed.
Mulder pushed Casey away, but Traci was standing in front of him when he turned around.
"If you want Dana, this isn't the way to do it. Do you really think she'd go for someone who decks her date in the middle of a restaurant?"
He stared at her then over at the table where his eyes met Webb's.
"No, probably not," he conceded and took his seat again.
Cameron just watched in amazement and fear. He was quickly falling in love with Traci but all this madness came with being part of her life. She smiled at him as she sat beside him.
"Don't worry. We won't let anyone hurt you," she whispered in his ear.
Webb's blood began to boil. How dare Traci lean over and kiss Cameron in a public place. He started to get up.
"Hey, two can play that game, Clay," Scully said. "Don't let her get to you."
She passed a glance at the table just in time to catch Mulder looking at her. Her heart skipped a beat.
"Dana, look, I'm sorry for bringing you in on this. You don't deserve this. It was a game at first, but it's not anymore." Webb took her hand across the table. "You are a great friend, and I don't want you to get hurt." She smiled at him.
"Don't worry about me. I'm not the one who has to choose between two people I'm in love with."
Kelly sensed the situation was getting out of hand. Placing the napkin on the table, she told Tiner she'd be back and made her way to Webb and Scully's table.
Traci:
Webb was trying not to laugh at the scene at the far table. 6'1" Mulder was being held back by the two petite CIA agents, who knew all too well how to take care of themselves. Scully glanced at the scene then lightly touched Webb's hand. Their eyes met. "You really love them both, don't you?"
He sighed.
"Yeah. Thus the problem."
"I..."
"Hey, you two." Kelly pulled up an empty chair and joined them, without an invitation. "Look, Kevin and I have been watching this whole thing unfold from over there by the window. It's gone too far."
"Hi to you too, Kelly," Scully said. Kelly looked at Scully.
"I know why Webb is here, I know why Casey and Traci and Dr. Cameron are here, but you and Mulder so obviously are so in love with each other so why are you trying to make him jealous?"
Scully's jaw dropped to the table.
"Kelly, you have no idea what is going on..." Webb began.
"Yes I do. You are involved in a love triangle with them and can't make up your mind who you want because you want them both. You can't have them both. Quite frankly I don't even know why they continue to give you chances." She passed a glance at the other table. Mulder was now seated and Cameron was gazing longingly at Traci.
"He seems like a very nice man. I hope Traci goes for him."
Webb felt his blood pressure rise at the thought of Traci with someone other than him. Then his eyes fell on Casey, who, at that very moment, was looking at him.
"We're not in kindergarten," Kelly finished as she got up and went back to Tiner.
Webb and Scully looked at each other, silently agreeing to end this thing.
He waited for her to get up and they both walked over to the others.
Kelly:
Scully and Webb approached the table where Charlie, Traci, Casey and Mulder sat.
"Mulder?" Scully said, placing a hand on his shoulder. "I think we need to talk, I'll be over at the bar."
Mulder looked from Casey to Scully's retreating back.
"Go" Casey said with a grin.
"But what about you?" Mulder said looking from Casey to Webb, who was standing behind her chair.
"I'll be fine, just go tell that woman that you love her for cryin' out loud!"
Mulder didn't need to be told twice, he quickly kissed Casey on the cheek and walked off in search of Scully.
"So, Webb, what can we do for you?" Traci asked, threading her fingers through Charlie's'.
Webb sat down in the chair Mulder had vacated and folded his hands on the table on front of him.
"OK, here's the situation as I see it. I have ...'feelings' for both of you and I don't have the slightest clue what to do about it."
Casey looked from Webb to Charlie, who was sitting there silently watching this whole drama unfold. "So you expect us to make up your mind for you?" she said.
Webb shrugged.
"I don't even know how either of you feels about me anymore, I think that we should sit down and discuss this...privately" He said with a pointed look at Charlie.
Charlie extracted his hand from Traci's and stood up.
"Well I can see I'd just be in the way here, I'm gonna get going now. Traci, I'll call you later tonight."
Traci glared at Webb.
"How dare you!" She said to Webb, placing her hand on Charlie's' arm to stop him from leaving. "Charlie, I don't want you to go anywhere, last time I checked we were on a date...one that Webb wasn't invited on. If anyone should be leaving it's him!"
Webb watched a smile break out on Cameron's' face as he looked down at Traci.
"You're sure?" Charlie asked.
"Yes, I'm sure! I came out tonight to spend it with a witty, intelligent, wonderful man and I was...then Webb showed up!" She glared at Webb again. "And now Webb is going to leave us alone so we continue our date...aren't you Webb?"
Clayton Webb looked from Traci to Cameron and shrugged.
"Fine, I'll see you tomorrow at the office."
Casey had sat there watching the whole exchange, Traci and Charlie were sitting there smiling at each other. She excused herself to use the powder room.
Casey knew deep down that it was Traci that Clay wanted, there was little point in her staying here. She waited until none of them were watching, then grabbed her coat and left the restaurant.
The cold night air was bracing as she walked down the deserted night time streets, the only noise being the occasional passing car and the steady rhythmic click of her heels on the sidewalk.
She was 4 blocks away from the restaurant when a shiver ran down her spine, and the hairs on the back of her neck stood up. Someone was behind her...she could feel them. The steady clicking of her heels was now punctuated with the heavy footfall of someone else...someone keeping a measured distance away.
She stepped up the pace, her heels beating a staccato rhythm on the pavement as she neared the corner of the next block.
The footfalls behind her sped up...if there had been any doubt before that she was being followed there was none now.
"Agent McDaniels?" The gravelly male voice behind her called out.
Casey turned to face her pursuer.
"Yes?"
"Good"
Came the reply, right before the flash of gunfire emanated from her pursuers hand.
Casey lay on the pavement, she didn't feel pain...just an overwhelming tiredness as she watched her attacker walk away. She watched as he stepped into the glow of a street lamp and it a cigarette, she knew this man....knew him from....but thinking was difficult and it was so hard to keep her eyes open. Succumbing, she shut her eyes and was swallowed by the tide of darkness.
Same Time
The Empire Room
"Where is Casey, she should be back by now?" Traci said, starting to get worried, she and Casey had become good friends since they had teamed up to get Webb back.
"Maybe you should go check the ladies room?" Charlie said.
"Check the ladies room for who?" Mulder asked as he and Scully walked arm in arm over to the table.
"Casey, she went to the bathroom ages ago."
"Casey's not in the bathroom, I saw her leave about 5 minutes ago. She walked off down the street." Scully said. "She must have gotten a cab."
"Damn." Traci said.
Mulder's cell phone trilled in his pocket and Scully rolled her eyes at him. "Mulder.."
"Agent Mulder, good to hear your voice. You might want to check your dates medical condition, I just saw her a moment ago and she didn't look very well."
"Where is she you sonofabitch?" Mulder yelled into his cellphone. "What have you done to her?"
"I suggest you hurry Agent Mulder, four blocks is a long way to run."
The call was disconnected.
"What was all that about?" Scully asked.
"Casey, I think she's hurt."
Mulder, Scully, Traci, Webb and Charlie all got up and raced out the door of the restaurant.
Webb, Cameron and Traci got in Cameron's' car and drove out of the parking lot with a screech while Mulder and Scully got into their car and followed. They had driven almost 5 blocks when a crumpled form on the pavement caught Traci's eye.
"There!!" she yelled at Charlie
Webb was the first out of the car, racing to Casey's side he turned her over.
Her eyes were closed, the front of her black dress glistening with blood.
Mulder reached her side moments after Webb, he looked down at Casey.
"Scully, get you're medical bag. She's been shot."
Scully got her bag out of the trunk of the car and raced to Casey's side.
She searched for a pulse...but found none.
She started CPR while Traci dialed for the Paramedics.
"Who did this?" Webb asked Mulder, his face a mask of fury.
They looked down at the ground. There...written in her own blood on the pavers , was Casey's message to them.
Three simple letters.......CSM
And a few feet away, a half smoked cigarette butt glowed red in the night. |
