THE COVENANT OF
THE LAW:
The commandments are one of the subjects that is
perhaps one of the best know in the Bible. And to our
sorry is doubtless less understood.Yes there is a
great margin of difference betwwen the Ten
Commandments and the Commandments of Love:And their
meanings,So in that context we look at them both.
First permit me to look at the Ten
Commandment(teaching from the Old
Testament.)
EXODUS:
20/1
And God spake all these words, saying,
20/2
I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of
the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
20/3
Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
20/4
Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or
any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or
that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water
under the earth.
20/5
Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve
them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God,
visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the
children unto the third and fourth generation of them
that hate me;
20/6
And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love
me, and keep my commandments.
20/7
Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in
vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that
taketh his name in vain.
20/8
Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
20/9
Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:
20/10
But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy
God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy
son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy
maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is
within thy gates:
20/11
For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the
sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh
day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and
hallowed it.
20/12
Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may
be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth
thee.
20/13
Thou shalt not kill.
20/14
Thou shalt not commit adultery.
20/15
Thou shalt not steal.
20/16
Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy
neighbour.
20/17
Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou
shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his
manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his
ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.
20/18
And all the people saw the thunderings, and the
lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the
mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they
removed, and stood afar off.
20/19
And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we
will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we
die.
20/20
And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is
come to prove you, and that his fear may be before
your faces, that ye sin not.
20/21
And the people stood afar off, and Moses drew near
unto the thick darkness where God was.
20/22
And the LORD said unto Moses, Thus thou shalt say
unto the children of Israel, Ye have seen that I have
talked with you from heaven.
20/23
Ye shall not make with me gods of silver, neither
shall ye make unto you gods of gold.
As I suppose most all christians know,That God sent
the Ten Commandments to the children of Israel and to
the people of all generations by and through Moses,
even to us today. The following is the instructions
that gave Moses.
EXODUS:
19/3
And Moses went up unto God, and the LORD called unto
him out of the mountain, saying, Thus shalt thou say
to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of
Israel;
19/4
Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I
bare you on eagles' wings, and brought you unto
myself.
19/5
Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and
keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar
treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth
is mine:
19/6
And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an
holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt
speak unto the children of Israel.
Yes God sent the Ten Commandments to all generations
by Moses, and it perhaps the most widely and popular
documents in the world even until today.
However there is some things that in studying we must
remember.
THE TEN
COMMANDMENTS:
1.These commandments were given to Moses, and did in
fact become the very center of the covenant of the
law.
2.That these commandments is really
laws,rules,demands as well as commands.
3.The Ten Commandments are a very important part of
the covenant of the law.
4.There is no salvation to be had through the Ten
Commandments alone.
LUKE
18/18
And a certain ruler asked him, saying, Good Master,
what shall I do to inherit eternal life?
18/19
And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good?
none is good, save one, that is, God.
18/20
Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit
adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear
false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother.
18/21
And he said, All these have I kept from my youth up.
18/22
Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him,
Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast,
and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have
treasure in heaven: and come, follow me.
18/23
And when he heard this, he was very sorrowful: for he
was very rich.
18/24
And when Jesus saw that he was very sorrowful, he
said, How hardly shall they that have riches enter
into the kingdom of God!
Yes we find under the covenant of the law we must
keep the law and be justified by work,(righteous
living being excepted as faith.)However under the new
covenant, salvation of--By Grace through
Faith.
HEBREWS
8/6
But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry,
by how much also he is the mediator of a better
covenant, which was established upon better promises.
8/7
For if that first covenant had been faultless, then
should no place have been sought for the second.
8/8
For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the
days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new
covenant with the house of Israel and with the house
of Judah:
8/9
Not according to the covenant that I made with their
fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to
lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they
continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them
not, saith the Lord.
8/10
For this is the covenant that I will make with the
house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I
will put my laws into their mind, and write them in
their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they
shall be to me a people:
8/11
And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and
every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all
shall know me, from the least to the greatest.
8/12
For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and
their sins and their iniquities will I remember no
more.
8/13
In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the
first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is
ready to vanish away.
THE COMMANDMENTS OF
LOVE:
MATTHEW
22/36
Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
22/37
Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God
with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with
all thy mind.
22/38
This is the first and great commandment.
22/39
And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy
neighbour as thyself.
22/40
On these two commandments hang all the law and the
prophets.
JOHN
13/34
A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one
another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one
another.
13/35
By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples,
if ye have love one to another.
MATTHEW:
5/43
Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love
thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.
5/44
But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them
that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and
pray for them which despitefully use you, and
persecute you;
1 JOHN:
3/11
For this is the message that ye heard from the
beginning, that we should love one another.
It has been said by someone and I know not who;But I
agree completely and totally:
GOD NEVER CREATED
A GREATER FORCE THAN LOVE:
As great as the above quote might be,it is the most
under rated statement that we very well may ever
hear.
Suppose we look just a short time on the love that
Jesus extends to us:
THE NEW
COVENANT:
BY GRACE THROUGH
FAITH:
HEBREWS:
9/11
But Christ being come an high priest of good things
to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle,
not made with hands, that is to say, not of this
building;
9/12
Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his
own blood he entered in once into the holy place,
having obtained eternal redemption for us.
9/13
For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes
of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to
the purifying of the flesh:
9/14
How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through
the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to
God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve
the living God?
9/15
And for this cause he is the mediator of the new
testament, that by means of death, for the redemption
of the transgressions that were under the first
testament, they which are called might receive the
promise of eternal inheritance.
9/16
For where a testament is, there must also of
necessity be the death of the testator.
9/17
For a testament is of force after men are dead:
otherwise it is of no strength at all while the
testator liveth.
9/18
Whereupon neither the first testament was dedicated
without blood.
9/19
For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the
people according to the law, he took the blood of
calves and of goats, with water, and scarlet wool,
and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book, and all the
people,
9/20
Saying, This is the blood of the testament which God
hath enjoined unto you.
9/21
Moreover he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle,
and all the vessels of the ministry.
9/22
And almost all things are by the law purged with
blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.
9/23
It was therefore necessary that the patterns of
things in the heavens should be purified with these;
but the heavenly things themselves with better
sacrifices than these.
9/24
For Christ is not entered into the holy places made
with hands, which are the figures of the true; but
into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of
God for us:
9/25
Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the
high priest entereth into the holy place every year
with blood of others;
9/26
For then must he often have suffered since the
foundation of the world: but now once in the end of
the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the
sacrifice of himself.
9/27
And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but
after this the judgment:
9/28
So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many;
and unto them that look for him shall he appear the
second time without sin unto salvation.
HEBREWS:
8/6
But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry,
by how much also he is the mediator of a better
covenant, which was established upon better promises.
8/7
For if that first covenant had been faultless, then
should no place have been sought for the
second.
HEBREWS
8/13
In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the
first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is
ready to vanish away.
HEBREWS:
10/1
For the law having a shadow of good things to come,
and not the very image of the things, can never with
those sacrifices which they offered year by year
continually make the comers thereunto perfect.
10/2
For then would they not have ceased to be offered?
because that the worshippers once purged should have
had no more conscience of sins.
10/3
But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again
made of sins every year.
10/4
For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of
goats should take away sins.
10/5
Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith,
Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body
hast thou prepared me:
10/6
In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast
had no pleasure.
10/7
Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it
is written of me,) to do thy will, O God.
10/8
Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt
offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not,
neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by
the law;
10/9
Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He
taketh away the first, that he may establish the
second.
10/10
By the which will we are sanctified through the
offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
HEBREWS:
10/16
This is the covenant that I will make with them after
those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into
their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;
10/17
And their sins and iniquities will I remember no
more.
11 CORINTHIANS
5/17
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new
creature: old things are passed away; behold, all
things are become new.
5/18
And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to
himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the
ministry of reconciliation;
HEHREWS:
13/20
Now the God of peace, that brought again from the
dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the
sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant,
13/21
Make you perfect in every good work to do his will,
working in you that which is wellpleasing in his
sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for
ever and ever. Amen.
At this point we have been studying the new covenant
and its meaning,But have not considered its original
plans,Now the plan was not just planed and
immediately carried out.It was planned long before. So
suppose we look at the following prophecies cocerning
the new covenant.
PROPHECY OF THE
COMING NEW COVENANT:
ISAIAH
11/1
And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of
Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:
11/2
And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the
spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of
counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the
fear of the LORD;
11/3
And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear
of the LORD: and he shall not judge after the sight
of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his
ears:
11/4
But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and
reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he
shall smite the earth: with the rod of his mouth, and
with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.
11/5
And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins,
and faithfulness the girdle of his reins.
ISAIAH
42/1
Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom
my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he
shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.
42/2
He shall not cry, nor lift up, nor cause his voice to
be heard in the street.
42/3
A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking
flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth
judgment unto truth.
42/4
He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till he have
set judgment in the earth: and the isles shall wait
for his law.
42/5
Thus saith God the LORD, he that created the heavens,
and stretched them out; he that spread forth the
earth, and that which cometh out of it; he that
giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to
them that walk therein:
The following proves tha t God did in fact fulfill
the two above prophecies.
JOHN:
3/16
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only
begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should
not perish, but have everlasting life.
3/17
For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn
the world; but that the world through him might be
saved.
As we look back and see all the victories that Jesus
bought with His precious blood,We find that great a
love is beyond human understanding.
Jesus also had other missions,One of them being the
mission of invitation:
JOHN:
14/6
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and
the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
MATTHEW:
11/28
Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden,
and I will give you rest.
11/29
Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek
and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your
souls.
11/30
For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
There is still one more mission that Jesus will
complete in God own due time
JOB:
19/25
For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall
stand at the latter day upon the earth:
