Now, the show is never really all that clear on the exact nature of the bug in the leaping software (or whatever it is that makes that thing go), but Dr. Beckett is finding himself put into situations where he's able to change history for the better (the implication is that the "bug" is actually a benevolent, overseeing force [like God] and that this force is using Sam as a vessel to put right what once was wrong, both on a personal and a worldwide level). Once Sam has accomplished his "goal" in a life, he leaps (whether the people at Project Quantum Leap are ready for him to do so or not). I'm running under two main assumptions with the leaps: 1) Sam (nor anyone else) really knows what he's there to do. There are statistical probabilities provided by Ziggy, but that's about it. So when the leap comes, it's entirely possible that he's caught completely off guard. 2) There has to be someone in the leapchamber to trade places with him when he leaps if he's going to get back (I believe this happened to Al once. A lightning storm at the Project building caused the imaging chamber to function as the leapchamber and Sam and Al switched places). "Production" note: Yes. That's the end. That's how all the QL ep's ended. It was always abrupt and without explanation. (although I could definitely write the one I start there... hmmmmmmm) ;) Phew... that said, Enjoy!
