Kiss and Don't Tell
by Mary-Cade Mandus

This is the scene that takes place the morning after Diane and Harry’s first meeting in the bar. I took a lot of liberties with this scene, hope no one minds.

From the staircase
She has a clear view
He’s
Sitting…sagging…leaning
Hunched over…
Head buttressed by his hands
Looking very Jolly Green Giant
Pea…asparagus…brussel sprout
Green.

She contemplates…fleetingly…
Placing a wastebasket strategically
But…
Nah, serve him right if he pukes Chivas
All over the stationhouse floor
Anyway, last time she looked
There was no "St." crowning her name.

He sees her…stands
Suffering…tottering…
On legs as wobbly as a new-born…
Wuss’
Geez…he looks…g.d. awful
This is going to be fun.

In a voice
Polluted by excess
"I don't remember what happened last night."
She’s going to give him nothing
"Did you...come to the motel with me?"
Nada
"Got a blackout."
Zilch
"For what it's worth I apologize."
Nyet

Coward…gutless…wimp…
Doesn’t have the balls
To look her in the eye
With a sneer…disgusted shake of her head
She turns on her heel
And leaves him standing there

Halfway up the stairs…she pauses
And watches his ‘walk a straight line” progress
Towards the door.
She smiles
A secret…woman's smile
And blows a mental kiss to the bright
Florid…crimson…
Hickey peeking…"Kilroy Was Here"-like
Over his shirt collar
On the back of his neck
