For John Coltrane

  Hassan

for john coltrane,

and I'm doing the work because I have to
and it's a cool summer afternoon
they haven't come to get me in the morning
not like they did my sister
angela davis
and
I listen to trane
and
I listen to trane
as he blows
I can't let these people fuck with me
I won't let these people fuck with me
I won't let them do to me what they did to you
and I sit back and listen
blow trane blow
and time is not drawing near
time is not slowing down
not
for
me
it's just beginning
and I remember that hot summer afternoon
in
1969
we were in ceddrick's bedroom
that had been converted from an attic to a bedroom
dam, you could see the whole city of pittsburgh
from his bedroom window
and
we broke open our first
1/4 pound of weed
and I saw that album cover on the floor
and I needed you
a love supreme
a love supreme
and we listened to a love supreme
and we got high
and I didn't realize what was out there
beyond pittsburgh
beyond those borders
when planes can't fly
but john you were there
you had been there
you saw it
on a round table
with a needle
all I can do is listen
and cry
and say why
it is not karma
it's what goes around comes around
and you went around John
and we had a chance
but we blew it
so
what do we do now
no more lies
no more lies
no more lies
my favorite things
these are a few of my favorite things
when the dog bites
when the bee stings
to
be
left
alone
to do my art
to be able to hang with the cool fools
on a summer afternoon
in the dog days of summer
with john coltrane
