NOW's Decision

I commend NOW for its decision to NOT back Paula Jones. It was the right decision to make based on the evidence.

It seems far too many people have forgotten Jones’ claims were allegations and that it is highly probable that her claims were not true to begin with.

First, she waited not just a month or two or six; she waited two-and-a-half years before she made any allegation whatsoever. Never during that time did she appear fearful or apprehensive about going to work. Or, did I miss a report of such during that time? Note that I stated ‘that time', not in the present when her case has essentially fallen apart.

Second, she was seen leaving the room in high spirits and alluded to the hope that she would become a regular visitor of then Governor Clinton.

Third, not one fact has emerged to support Jones’ allegations. Quite to the contrary, evidence, such as it is, supports the hypothesis that her story was concocted for her own and/or the Republican Party’s gain.

Fourth, the decision made that the case did not have merit is fully in compliance with sexual harassment laws. Those that wish for an appeal and the like actually are hoping that the laws will be manipulated just for Jones and against President Clinton.

In fact, the desire is that the laws be ignored in order to discredit a man that has done an outstanding job as president. Anti-Clintonites are the backbone of this endeavor and, were the shoe on the other foot, you can bet that every one of them, if put in the same position by a dishonest woman, would want the law stuck to, not manipulated.

Every example used, such as one by Severin, a regular contributor to MSNBC, are bunk and always based on a false premise that Jones is telling the truth. It is well that NOW recognized this and did not succumb to political pressure.

The rights of women must be protected as must the rights of men. Actions against any individual must not remove his or her right of the presumption of innocence.

Political pressure must not be bowed to in such matters. Instead, we must focus on, and insist, laws as written are used in determining justice.

NOW's decision will not be the determining factor in this case but, regardless, a major women's organization has recognized the need to stay within the laws. It is just too bad, Ladies and Gentlemen, that Starr and the Republican Party, and the Democratic Party on occassion, can't do the same.
