After winning the first two games of their series with the Zephyrs, the Guns have to wait till tomorrow to try to come closer to first in the Northern Division. Today's game was rained out, and will be part of a doubleheader tomorrow. The Guns are only 11/2 games out of first place, with Tacoma's loss to Vancouver today. The hard charging Edmonton Trappers are only three games back after winning a double header against Salt Lake today.
The Guns have been finding ways to win games, seeming to hit when they have to and pitch when the hitting's not there. When it comes to the stats, the guys simply have not been that impressive. The team ranks 12th in hitting, and Mario Valdez, the team's top hitter, 19th in the league. The only statistic where a Cannon leads is stolen bases, where Lou Frazier is tied for first with 19. No hitters have been called up yet this year, but the injury bug has hit the Cannons so hard that Spenser's lineup card is very easy to fill out. As of today there are only nine hitters that are ready to play. Hopefully the day off will bring back a couple of the guys listed as day to day.
Our team ERA ranks 11th, not bad considering the semi friendly confines of Burns Stadium is their home. Their ERA is just above five (5.03) and the staff has been able to gut it up, despite callups and injuries that left Tom Spenser at one point with only two starters on staff.
On Tuesday the Salt Lake Trappers come to Burns. It's the first meeting between the two clubs this year. The Buzz are on the Internet. Click on the logo below to listen to the games. Or come down to Burns, and see fireworks both during and after Tuesday's game.

The Cannons have split their four game stand with the Sky Sox, and remain three games behind the elusive Rainiers. The Guns come back for an 8 game homestand, against New Orleans and Salt Lake. For a look at the upcoming homestand, click here to see the Cannons promotional schedule.
In other Cannons news, Robert Machado was the lone Cannon named to the Triple A All Star Game. While others could be considered candidates, Machado thus far has been the Guns MVP, and is a worthy choice for the game, to be held July 8th in Norfolk, Virginia.

After two days of rain, the Cannons had a great weekend against the Dukes. The broom patrol was out during the second game of Sunday's doubleheader, as the Guns swept the Dukes, marking the first time in Cannons' history that they have taken two doubleheaders in two days.
So far in Colorado Springs, the Guns have split the first two games with the Sky Sox, who I'm sure can't wait to be rid of teams from Alberta. The Sox lost 7 of 8 here, losing three of four against the Cannons and being swept by the Trappers in Edmonton. In all, they have lost eight of the last ten games against Alberta based teams.
Speaking of the Trappers, they have ridden a nine game winning streak to be back in the fight for first place in the West Division. They are still in third, but are now only five games back of Tacoma, and only two behind the second place Guns. Overall, everybody in the West has had a good June thus far, making the records in the division comparable with those in the rest of the league.
On Friday, the team is back in town to face the New Orleans Zephyrs for the first time. The Zephyrs are not on the Internet, so either click above, or come down to Burns Stadium for the weekend. Friday night we celebrate Christmas in June! Hope to see you there.

The rains have caused today's game to be postponed, so time for a bit of news:
The Cannons have won their last three, snapping out of their tailspin on the road. A 15-5 win yesterday over the Sky Sox is the kind of firepower the Guns need to have in order to rise in the Western Division. Calgary is 5 games out of first going into tonight's action.
Neither Colorado Springs nor the Guns next opponent, the Dukes, broadcast on the internet. So to get the latest information, click on the scoreboard above, or even better, come down to Burns Stadium and take in the games!

The Cannons went into the lions den and came one inning away from a split. Two of four from the best team in the league in their park would have been great, but with Iowa coming back in the bottom of the ninth Sunday the Cannons left for Omaha with only one win. That leaves them five games back of Tacoma for first place, and two games under .500.
Omaha has about the same record as the Guns, and they split here. At least a split in their last meeting of the year would help keep the team in the hunt for first in the western division. Omaha is not online for radio, so check back here for updates, and links above for the live scoreboard.
The Guns finally have a new pitching coach. Orsino Hill, whom I remember being here with a couple of different teams in the early 90's, got one heck of a promotion. He was scheduled to be the hitting instructor for the Sox's rookie league team, but as that team's season had not yet begun, the decision was made to not disrupt the other teams by having the AA hitting coach move up here, and so on down the chain.
The team, complete with new coach, is back in town on Saturday evening, to play Colorado Springs. The Sky Sox are last in their division going into tomorrow's games.

While the Guns ended their homestand on a sour note, losing 8-1 to the Grizzlies, they go on the road on a roll, winning 6 of 8 here at home, and 10 of the last 12. Thanks to Tacoma's loss last night, they are still three games back of the Rainiers, and 2 1/2 games ahead of the Trappers in third.
After an off day today, the Cannons go to the American Midwest, to face the Iowa Cubs and Omaha Royals. It's the Cannons first meeting with the Cubs, who sport the best record in the PCL at 33-19, while the Royals (who split their four game set here last month) are below .500.
The Iowa games are broadcast online. Game times are 6:15 Calgary time Thursday through Saturday, while on Sunday the game starts at 5:05. This is a service from the Iowa Cubs, so linking when games are not on will result in an error message. Click on the graphic below to hear Cannons baseball.
