Conference Descriptions

Net Kids

This is a discussion conference for those 12 and under.

Net Teen

A discussion forum for those 13-19, though perhaps a few years at the upper end will be overlooked. For discussing all kinds of general topics of interest to young people.

Christian Teen

A more focused discussion forum for the 13-19 age group, dealing specifically with the Christian faith and life. Post anything you find interesting - something you've read and enjoyed or found useful, a description of what your church youth group has been doing, your thoughts and opinions about things.

Students

This conference is for students at tertiary institutions - universities, technikons, theological seminaries, Bible colleges, nursing colleges and so on.

If you're a student you might like to consider setting up a BBS, especially if you are something of a computer fundi. BBSs were big in the early 1990s, but since the Internet went commercial many people have never heard of them. But running a BBS is a bit like being your own ISP on the cheap. Read more about it on our BBS page.

2. THE FAMILYNET BBS NETWORK

If you are within reasonable calling range of a FamilyNet BBS that carries the Net Kids, Teen and Christian Teen conferences, you can call the BBS to participate. This is a better way to participate, because BBS software allows you to address a message to a particular participant rather than the whole list. Others can still read or reply to it, but it makes it easier to see which messages are addressed to you.

You can check the BBS method right from your web browser. Just go to:

http://www.family-bbs.net/

You will see the BBS log-in screen. If it's your first call, register as a new user, then click on "Join conferences". Wait for the page to load (it's big!), then scroll down and click on the ones you want to join. Scroll to the bottom and click to actually join them. Then you get a screen with just the ones you join, and you can click on them to read, reply or enter new messages.

For more information on BBSs and how they can be used, you can check the following Web pages:

http://www.oocities.org/Athens/7734/bbs.htm

http://www.fmlynet.org/

If your nearest BBS does not belong to FamilyNet, ask the sysop to consider joining, and to check those Web pages, or contact me with more information on how to do so. If it belongs to FamilyNet but does not carry the these conferences, ask the sysop to areafix to NET_KIDS, NET_TEEN, CHRISTIAN_TEEN and STUDENTS.If there is no FamilyNet BBS near you, why not start your own? See the BBS page for more infornmation.

Athens is a neighbourhood in Geocities - a fascinating concept of a virtual community. If you'd like to meet some of the other people in this neighbourhood, click here! You might even like to move in yourself.
