HISTORY

The Havanese is a member of the Bichon family of small dogs. This family includes, but is not limited to the Maltese, Bolognese, Lowchen, Bichon Frise, and Coton de Tulear.

The Havanese is now available in a very wide range of colours. It is believed that the original dog was white and that colour was subsequently added through the addition of other breeds.

The exact origin of the Havanese seems to be somewhat of a mystery, but most experts have agreed that the Havanese had originated from the Western Mediterranean area. Cuban’s are said to believe that Italian Sea Captains brought the Havanese to Havana aboard their ships, which is probably how they obtained their names.
