Jogging on the beach or spending time on the treadmill, stair stepper or exercize bike is better than just sitting there and doing nothing. It's great for conditioning of the heart! However, the best exercize for reshaping your body is weight training. When you gain muscle, your body requires more energy to maintain that new muscle. Fat does not require any energy to maintain - it just sits there. If you do nothing but aerobic or cardio exeercize and eat less, your results will not be optimal.
