Colleges & Universities
Brigham Young University. The largest private university in the nation, BYU is well known for its affiliation with the "Mormon" church. The school is recognized as one of the top schools in business (especially entrepreneurship) and accounting (#2 in the nation), law, and other fields. It draws students from across the nation and around the world, and is also known for the language abilities of the students, many of whom serve voluntary missions for their church in many parts of the world. Also known as "Quarterback U," BYU has one of the most exciting football teams in the nation.

Utah Valley State College. Originally known as "The Tech," UVSC started out as a technical and trade college. As the area has grown and the educational needs of area students have
increased, it evolved into a community college, and finally a
state college with four year degrees. Originally many of the area
high school graduates attended BYU, but as the church population
grew, fewer and fewer students were able to attend the private
university.
 |
University of
Phoenix. This is another educational resource in
the community. The Provo campus is one of many locations
for this adult-oriented institution. Here I've linked
their main page. They're also the largest private
university in the country--BYU is only counting full-time
students, and only at their Provo campus. |
Private Schools
 |
Meridian
School. Only one block from our house, this is
an excellent private school with reasonable tuition (for
private schools). Many of the teachers are also BYU
Faculty or professionals in their field--who have
children attending the school. |
Provo School District
Only those schools that have a real web page are currently
listed here. Eventually I may provide a section for the rest of
the schools in Provo, when I have time to gather worthwhile data
on them. Most of these sites are quite slow, unfortunately. Click on the pictures to go to school webpages.
High Schools
 |
Provo High School. "Bulldogs."
Provo's oldest current high school, and a perennial
powerhouse in sports. They recently got a brand new
library with ninety computers and more room for books
and reading areas. This made room for badly needed
office and classroom space.
2000 Girl's Volleyball 4A State Champions
2000 Boy's Soccer 4a Regional Champions |
 |
Timpview High School. "T-Birds." Also an
excellent school, Timpview has a strong academic
tradition in addition to the usual sports programs. |
 |
Independence High School. The theme here is
"Designed to be Different." The purpose of this high
school is to meet the needs of students that couldn't
have their needs met at the other area schools. |
Middle Schools
 |
Centennial Middle School. "The Timberwolves."
Nearly brand new, this school was built in the centennial
year of Utah's statehood (hence the name). When they
built this school, everyone wanted to attend it and leave
the older schools empty. |
 |
Dixon Middle School. Probably the oldest
middle school in Provo. For some reason this site us
much faster than the other Provo school sites. The site
is currently under major construction. |
 |
Farrer Middle School. This school is only
three blocks from my home. If you look closely at the
picture, you'll see that it is an older school. I've
been there many times to vote and participate in
political meetings. Natalie is just entering middle
school here. |
Elementary Schools
 |
Canyon Crest Elementary. This school
serves Edgemont, Sherwood Hills, and the Riverbottoms--some of the wealthier areas of Provo. A Centennial School. |
 |
Edgemont Elementary. "Eagles." This
school serves Edgemont and the Riverbottoms. Across the
street from Timpview High School. New website! |
 |
Franklin Elementary. "Falcons." Franklin was
an older elementary school in an older area of Provo,
but because of structural problems, they recently built
a new school on the same block. The area is undergoing
urban renewal. |
 |
Grandview Elementary. "Grizzlies." This school
is in a nice yet mostly unpretentious neighborhood of
Provo. 1996/97 Sallee Hopkinson Teacher of
the Year. |
 |
Joaquin Elementary. "Warriors." Built in
1938, this school is in the middle of off-campus student
housing south of BYU. My daughter Natalie attended here.
Great website, with a story about the school name you
can't miss. |
 |
Maeser Elementary. "Mustangs." One of the
oldest schools in Provo, it turned 100 years old on Nov
9, 1998. My daughter Natalie took some of her first
dance classes there when she was little. In the year
2000 the controversy is Provo school board's plan to
close the school and use it for other community
programs, which the neighbors do not want. |
 |
Provost Elementary. "Cougars." An
eastside school--but not in the expensive area. My son
Bradley has played countless soccer games here, and is
now playing Jr Jazz basketball here.
|
 |
Rock Canyon Elementary. This is another one
of the elementary schools in the nicer areas of town,
and covers the Edgemont and Indian Hills areas.
Governer's Award 1993, Centennial School 1994-95 and
1995-96. Not much to see on their site right now. |
 |
Sunset View Elementary. "Flamey" the Dragon.
Until this fall, the only elementary school on the West
side of town, where all the new construction in town is
going on (except they just passed a moratorium on new
growth there). It has an interesting mix of poorer and
richer neighborhoods. |
 |
Timpanogos Elementary. "Indians." Originally
built in 1892, a new school was built on the same site
in 1938. This page has alot of content, including the
story of Timpanogos, the natural landmark that dominates
Utah County. |
 |
Wasatch Elementary. "'Satch." Consistently
the best public elementary school in Utah. Ranked in the
top five schools along the Wasatch Front by the
Southerland Institute--the only public school to receive
the honor. Also received the Governor's Excellence in
Education Award and Utah Centennial School
award. Bradley & Alyssa attend here even though they're
in the Juaquin area. Most Students come from Oak Hills--where many professors live--and BYU Married Student Housing. |
 |
Westridge Elementary. "Wildcats."
This school is the second elementary school in the
Grandview area of Provo. |
Orem Schools
Alpine School District. This school district includes Orem schools and all the Utah County cities to the North. On my page, just the Orem schools with web sites are linked. The district page has more info and links to schools in other towns.
High Schools

|
Mountain View High School. "Bruins." State
Powerhouse in sports. The building is also known as "the
submarine" because of the architecture. Adjacent to the
school is the Orem Fitness Center. 1998
State Boys Basketball 5A Champions Girls Basketball
currently rated 7th in the nation. |
 |
Orem High School. "Tigers" Reputedly one of
the best academic high schools in the state. The school
also has a student-run radio station that has been the
source of some well-known area radio personalities. |
 |
Timpanogos High School. "Timberwolves" This
is the newest high school in Orem. Rather than clamoring
to get in when it was first built, nobody wanted to go
there if they were involved with athletics--perhaps
understandable with the record they have at Mountain
View. |

A special note on Windsor Elementary--they have started a CyberFair project and have found many sites, resources and information about the community. Many of the pages are not finished, however. The most complete pages are the ones on local recreation. School children have gathered the material and written it in their own words, which are both informative and entertaining.
